American Heritage School is Hiring an Art Teacher Near Salt Lake, UT

Art Teacher

Bachelor's degree or equivalent is required.

Candidates should have a minimum of two years' experience, preferably in a formal elementary or middle school setting teaching Art in grades K-12.

Candidates must demonstrate an enduring love of youth, a love of teaching and learning, and a desire to work in a faith-based atmosphere that is aligned with values taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Candidates should be able to help students learn:

  • to create artwork with their own hands and know that they are part of the Divine Design;
  • the elements of design;
  • how to observe beauty in the world;
  • about artistic movements across history and regions (e.g. Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Medieval, Pre-Columbian, Byzantine, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassicism/Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Regionalism, Abstract Expressionism, Non-Figurative, Art Deco, Color Field, Pop Art, Op Art, Minimalism, Photo Realism, and Installation Art) and the great artistic masters of the past;
  • an introduction to the many tools, mediums and styles of creating art images.
  • to develop their talents through persistent efforts in the art practices of coloring, cutting, drawing, clay-building, printmaking, sketching, colored pencils, water color, acrylic painting, computer-based drawing tools, pottery, etching, and other 2D and 3D media.

A teaching demonstration will be required of top candidates.

Successful candidates should demonstrate high, warm, consistent energy so that students can tell the teacher loves them and the subject matter; broad knowledge and deep intelligence about each subject matters taught so that students become interested in the details and relevance of each subject; students will draw deeply on the teacher as a source of inspiration, wisdom, and relevance; ability to distill knowledge into concepts and principles (statements of truth that can readily be applied to a wide variety of circumstances); strong oral skills, including the ability to present information in an engaging, way with pacing that moves quickly and doesn't drag; strong written communication skills, including the ability to create and post assignments with clear instructions, models, and rubrics; strong classroom management skills, including the ability to stay organized and create routines that are purposeful and effectively implemented; a habit of communicating with employees and parents in timely, collaborative, precise, helpful, positive ways; experience in preparing and facilitating daily lesson plans; experience establishing and communicating clear learning objectives to students and parents; ability to use a variety of pedagogical methods that engage students in active reasoning and relating; and experience monitoring and reporting progress to parents.

Special education training in teaching students with specific learning disabilities is helpful, but is not required.

Candidates should be professional in appearance and demeanor. They should be willing to uphold and serve as ambassadors for the AHS Mission, Honor Code, and Diversity Statement on and off-campus.

Position is available beginning in the 2024-25 school year.

Location of position is 142 W. 200 N., Salt Lake City, Utah.
