This position performs advanced administrative, technical or program level work within the Communications Department, with an emphasis on supporting a variety of the department’s digital and editorial communications programs. The incumbent will support the development and implementation of communication strategies within the department. This includes support in the creation of website and social network content, blogs, online campaigns, email messages, databases and the development of member communications capacity.

DUTIES:

  • Provides departmental support by monitoring various social media platforms for relevant subject matter and engagements. Serves as administrative point for digital systems.
  • Creates limited editorial content, including social media posts, advertising text and basic correspondence.
  • Monitors the AFSCME Digital inbox, looks up member information in membership database, and triage member queries and route member requests to appropriate internal contacts.
  • Supports and helps maintain the marketing and social media calendar.
  • Works with digital and visual communications teams to review and ensure that proper meta data is maintained on photos and other media.
  • Formats emails using Action Network. Provides support to field communicators and campaigns using Action Network.
  • Prepares, analyzes and distributes weekly and monthly metrics reports to management and digital teams.
  • Completes basic Union Hall training and have a general familiarity with the platform. Maintains accurate and up to date reports on Union Hall help requests and the time to completion. Works with digital team members to triage and tier help requests.
  • Maintains archival and file systems.
  • Collects and reviews unit specific invoices for payment by comparing against source documents or records to ensure payments are appropriate and services were rendered. Logs into spreadsheet, prepares and forwards for approval and final processing.
  • Participates in unit’s weekly conference calls and document items discussed.
  • Performs other administrative duties such as preparing travel arrangements for members of the department, answering and routing telephone calls and providing back-up administrative support to other units within the Communications Department.
  • Provides onsite support for AFSCME events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college with an associate degree and coursework in communications, political science and liberal arts and a minimum of seven (7) years of relevant work experience in online communications or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Skills:

  • Knowledge of labor, political or community organizing, including communications work.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate with staff at all levels and in a team environment.
  • Knowledge and experience with electronic forms of communications, including email and websites.
  • Ability to effectively use new media tools to communicate with target groups.
  • Ability to use initiative to execute projects that may require definition.
  • Interest and background in labor movement, progressive and change.
  • Proven ability to juggle several projects and meet deadlines.
