POSITION SUMMARY

Based in Washington, D.C., the NSLI-Y Program Officer provides support to overseas participants, staff, partners, and natural parents prior to and during NSLI-Y programs. NSLI-Y is a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). NSLI-Y provides merit-based scholarships for eligible U.S. high school students to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs. The NSLI-Y Program Coordinator will report to the NSLI-Y Assistant Program Manager for Placement.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage time-sensitive communication related to on-program support in a professional, effective, and confidential manner:
    • With support from NSLI-Y management, respond to and provide guidance to staff regarding issues including but not limited to program logistics, student behavioral concerns, cultural adjustment, and health and safety matters.
    • Respond to communications from overseas Resident Directors and participate in regular calls regarding participant monitoring across various time zones and outside of standard business hours as needed.
    • Communicate with participants and natural parents regarding program preparations, travel logistics, and on-program concerns or feedback.
    • Draft and contribute to concise, clear, and objective on-program support reports for NSLI-Y Administration and ECA.
  • Supports NSLI-Y Program in daily operations of summer and academic year programs:
    • Contributes to participant logistical support, including processing visa applications, booking accommodations, and making travel arrangements.
    • Monitors participant travel and supports participants with troubleshooting;
    • Assists with design and facilitation of pre-departure orientations and other program events;
    • Contributes to program materials, including participant guides and parent materials;
    • Assists overseas partners with program preparations;
  • Assists with processing finance requests, procurement, and tracking expenses as needed;
  • Assists with regulation compliance and contributes to detailed reporting to ECA;
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications


• Excellent communication and organizational skills;
• Fluency in English and strong writing skills; 
• Ability to communicate with overseas staff across multiple time zones and platforms; 
• Ability to exercise problem-solving skills, good judgment, and discretion; 
• Commitment to supporting diverse participants and contributing to an inclusive work environment; 
• Minimum of 2 years of experience working with exchange programs or in similar field;
• BA in relevant field (e.g. language, education, international affairs, area studies) required;
• Study, work, or travel experience overseas with some experience in NSLI-Y host countries preferred; 
• Experience with language learning or proficiency in a NSLI-Y target language preferred.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE POSITIONThis position may require occasional domestic or international travel. This role includes some on-call responsibilities, including monitoring communications outside of business hours for emergencies. This is a hybrid position based in Washington, D.C. 
Position contingent upon funding.

WORK CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDSEssential functions are performed in a hybrid setting from home or in a general office setting with low noise. Job demands may require long periods of sitting; telephone work and/or computer work, as well as interactions with other team members and external stakeholders and lifting supplies up to 20 pounds.
