Alliance for Safety and Justice (ASJ) is a multi-state organization that aims to replace ineffective criminal justice system policies with what works to keep people safe. We are organizers, policy advocates and experts, research and communications specialists, and grassroots mobilizers. We represent diverse crime survivors as well as people living with old records as key public safety stakeholders. We organize people most harmed by violence and incarceration, and through nonpartisan coalition building and strategic campaigning, we change laws in the large states to transform the nation. Who You Are

A new position, ASJ seeks an experienced leader to drive all aspects of ASJ’s events. A successful candidate will have a passion for our mission, the technical, creative and leadership skills to put together high-impact, inspirational events, and a collaborative spirit that can operate effectively in a fast paced organization with complex advocacy programs and many moving parts. The ASJ Events Director will join a large organization working to reform state criminal justice and public safety policies and transform the dialogue on crime, safety, and incarceration. Our events, held nationally and in key states, are a vital tool for strategic advocacy, member connectivity, coalition building, fundraising, marketing, and donor engagement. We seek a leader who can consistently deliver events that are meaningful and impactful, that garner press and brand awareness, foster strong community relations, increase revenue and donor loyalty, and acquire new supporters for ASJ.

What You Will Do

ASJ Event Management (60%)

  • Develop and lead the execution of a wide range of events, including but not limited to a national Survivors Speak convening in Washington D.C. with thousands of participants, state-level Survivors Speak and TimeDone Day convenings, as well as smaller donor cultivation events, advocacy events to drive policy reform, and all staff events to build community and learn
  • Under advisement from the management team, plan and set the organizational events calendar for the year
  • Exercise responsibility for the overall management, including budget and financial resources, pre-planning, facilitating cross-team coordination, execution, post-event follow-up and ROI analysis for all organizational events
  • Develop event concepts, themes and formats for the organization that engage members, supporters, increase brand awareness and grow revenue
  • Negotiate with venues, consultants and vendors to secure rates that enhance budgets in collaboration with ASJ’s Grants & Contracts department and other Operations staff
  • Develop event budgets and oversee financial reporting of events to internal departments and external partners and consultants
  • Develop content for event correspondence, collateral materials, social media, and web in collaboration with the Marketing & Communications division
  • Oversee post-event coordination, including but not limited to: debrief meetings, recognition for key constituents, financial reporting and data transfer
  • Collaborate with ASJ’s Development team in event planning and follow-up to support fund development goals and secure sponsorships, and in-kind gifts
  • Manage internal and external event volunteers before and on the day of the event

Events Team & Partner Management (40%)

  • Provide event management training for and oversight of Events department staff to maximize productivity and efficiency
  • Vet, select and manage consultants and vendors prior to and during events to ensure flawless efficiency
  • Inform and update staff members and other stakeholders throughout the event cycle

Requirements

Required Experience

  • 7 to 10 years’ experience developing and managing events of different kinds, including major national events with more than 1,000 participants
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with ability to establish and implement systems and identify resources to ensure successful completion of projects
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to represent the organization externally across a wide range of constituencies and in a variety of settings
  • Strong relationship development and management skills: ability to listen, find common ground, and cultivate long-term relationships
  • Supervisorial experience and strong leadership skills
  • The flexibility to work early mornings, late evenings, and occasional weekends due to the many time zones in which staff live and the nature of our events
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team to meet goals in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment; self-directed to take action and resolve issues
  • Proven effectiveness leading and managing staff and volunteers through events
  • Ability to effectively multitask and manage concurrent projects and responsibilities, ensuring deadlines are met
  • Excellent relationship management and interpersonal skills: the ability to work effectively with donors, volunteers and staff; display superior judgment and diplomatic skills; excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Proven strong negotiating skills
  • Enthusiasm, commitment to excellence, self-motivation, highly organized and detail oriented
  • The ability to handle multiple tasks with organization and accuracy
  • A collaborative, team-oriented attitude

Preferred Experience

  • An understanding of charitable giving legal guidelines, specifically as it relates to fundraising events
  • Project Management Certification
  • Working Conditions & Physical Demands
  • Frequent travel will be required
  • Requires use of a desktop, laptop, or video display terminal
  • Ability to communicate, receive and understand information through oral and written communication and proofread and check documents for accuracy
  • Requires communicating information with co-workers and stakeholders; reading correspondence, instructions and/or technical documents; writing correspondence and/or reports and filling in forms

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this role is $125,000 - $135,000, and will be offered commensurate with experience.
