Summary:
Under general supervision the Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) facilitates a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach in the provision of healthcare within a specialty area. The Wound CNC is a “clinical expert” in evidence-based nursing practice as related to treatment and management of wounds. With responsibility for monitoring and sustaining excellence in the provision of nursing care through the support and development of clinical standards of practice, implementation of education, and establishing competency for staff members, the Wound CNC will demonstrate a firm knowledge base and clinical expertise, function as a clinical resource, conduct and facilitate patient care consultation, and assess the impact of appropriate practice on patient outcomes. The Wound CNC will work closely and collaboratively with all disciplines to establish and provide collegial relationships that benefit our staff, patients and the community.

Responsibilities:
Works closely with all nursing staff to provide and evaluate hands on patient care. Assesses patients and provides recommendations for treatment of all wounds and skin disorders as requested by physician order. Implements interventions as agreed upon by provider and educates bedside nurse in wound management. Rounds on patients and provides clinical oversight to management of wounds. Consultant responsibilities: Enhances the quality of patient care by providing consultation to bedside nurses and care providers. Enhances the quality of the nurse experience by providing expert guidance, problem solving, and assistance with developing plan of care as it relates to wound care. Maintains up to date knowledge of best practice in wound care and leads efforts to keep nursing and treatment strategies in line with evidence-based practice. Assess needs, develops plans, and leads performance improvement projects that decrease development of pressure injuries and wound complications. Demonstrates effective leadership skills when planning, problem solving, and evaluating nursing practice as it relates to specialty area. Works cohesively as part of the Acute Care administrative team to maintain clinical alignment with Inpatient and Organizational goals and expectations. Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS
  • K nowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to skin and wound.
  • K nowledge of culture and diversity of the Native population.
  • K nowledge of relevant educational content and appropriate methods of delivery and the ability to develop and facilitate relevant and effective education for adult learners.
  • K nowledge on collecting pertinent information related to potential educational needs of the nurse, assess this data to determine the target audience and the learner needs, implement the program and evaluate a program and revise as necessary.
  • K nowledge of variety of treatment and management options as it relates to skin and wound care including but not limited to: pressure/support surfaces & tools for prevention, bed options, skin care products, wound management supplies & products. As it relates to specialty area:
  • S kill in assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the plan of care and plan of care is patient/family-centered, developmentally and age-appropriate, and culturally relevant.
  • S kill in initiating prevention strategies, interventions, and treatments of skin disorders and wound management.
  • S kills to develop activities to facilitate learners’ achievement of the educational objectives.
  • S kills to ensure planned educational activities are implemented and the knowledge to conduct comprehensive evaluations of all educational activities.
M INIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
A ssociate Degree in Nursing
M INIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
N on-supervisory – Two (2) years registered nurse experience which demonstrates leadership skills and ability to work within a team environment, effective communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, data analysis and research interpretation skills, and computer/word processing skills.
M INIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
C urrent registered nurse license in the State of Alaska and remain active with all annual licensing requirements.
C urrent Basic Life Support card required.
C ertified Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse (CWOCN) certification from Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB) or Wound Care Certified (WCC) and Ostomy Management Specialist (OMS) from the National Alliance of Wound Care and Ostomy Certification Board (NAWCCB), required within 24 months of start of position.
PR EFERRED EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
B achelors of Science in Nursing
P REFERRED EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
2 years as an RN with direct wound and ostomy care.
P REFERRED CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
N ational certification is preferred.
A DDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
W ork involves the potential for exposure to infectious diseases.
