Alabama State Department of Education is Hiring a School Bookkeeper (Internal Transfer) Near Cullman, AL

Title: School Bookkeeper

Supervisor: Principal, Accounting Manager and/or Chief School Financial Officer

Start Date: 7/18/2024

Salary: CCBOE Salary Schedule

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Goals:

  • To provide accounting and bookkeeping services for the efficient operation of the Accounting Department and management of school fund.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  • Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  • Prepares financial documents for posting to payroll, general ledger, accounts payable, bank deposits, and journal entries.
  • Posts transactions for payroll, general ledger, accounts payable, bank deposits, and journal entries.
  • Assists department staff with reports and/or tasks assigned.
  • Communicates with vendors or employees regarding accounts payable, personnel information, or payroll.
  • Conducts routine bookkeeping duties such as posting ledgers, balancing accounts, reconciling bank statements, reporting, and bank deposits.
  • Verifies and reconciles various reports and documents for the department, the SDE, and other internal and external entities.
  • Assists in the preparation and filing of various monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Verifies and prepares information for payroll, accounts payable, general ledger, receipts, and other areas for input to financial database.
  • Researches various issues related to payroll or accounts payable.
  • Researches and prepares information documents and surveys requested by governmental entities or other entities.
  • Engages in personal professional growth, adheres to professional standards, and demonstrates professional ethics and sound judgment.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
  • Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system.
  • Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
  • Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  • Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

Terms of Employment/Salary: As established by the Board and applicable state law.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
