CUSTODIAL AND GROUNDS SUPERVISOR

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Trade or technical school training or experience preferred
  • Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

JOB GOAL:


The Custodial and Grounds Supervisor has primary responsibility for maintaining and safeguarding the building grounds and equipment to create a safe environment for working and learning.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Keeps building and premises, including restrooms, commons areas, classrooms, hallways, sidewalks, driveways and play areas neat and
  • Checks daily to insure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building
  • Sweeps and/or vacuums classrooms daily and dusts
  • Scrubs, hoses down and disinfects toilet floors daily and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
  • Cleans corridors after school each day and during the day when their condition requires
  • Washes all windows on both the inside and the outside at least one time a year, and more frequently if
  • Handles hazardous materials and wastes in a safe and sanitary
  • Makes minor repairs and performs maintenance duties as
  • Reports needs for major repairs promptly to the
  • Reports immediately to the principal any damage to the school
  • Remains on the school premises during established work hours, and during non- school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and attendance is required by the
  • Attends work on a regular basis, adheres to time schedules, and reports absences in a timely
  • Reports work-related injuries as
  • Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights turned off, except those left on for safety
  • Arms/disarms alarms or security systems as directed
  • Keeps an inventory of supplies and equipment, and requisitions needed replacements from the principal on a timely
  • Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the
  • Complies with appropriate laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste and maintains acceptable health and safety standards regarding the use of cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, as directed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist in ensuring high levels of staff performance.

2. Conducts professional development and training for custodial personnel.

3. Plan and assign work (develops schedules) and supervises staff in performance of critical department activities.

4. Assist in evaluating staff regarding performance.

5. Responsible for helping maintain the care, condition and appearance of buildings and all facilities and grounds.

  • Coordinates and schedules regular inspection of all buildings to ensure compliance with expected standards for cleaning and
  • Oversee inventory and ordering of all custodial, and grounds
  • Inspect and maintain all custodial, and grounds
  • Works closely with Principal on budget and purchasing of needed equipment.
  • Recommend annual needs for the school including capital improvements
  • Organize and implement a program of preventive maintenance of mechanical and custodial equipment at the school.
  • Trains all staff (custodial and grounds) in proper safety and training used as part of their job duties and equipment; and ensures staff are following all safety procedures and
  • Regularly meets with Principal and Facilities Director regarding projects, issues, and needs of buildings and grounds.
  • Be available before and after the normal work day for emergencies.
  • Ensure and coordinate proper OSHA compliance and training for all personnel
  • Regularly communicate with maintenance and grounds staff
  • Interact and communicate with all district level administrative staff on relevant projects and activities (For example: weekend school activities that use facilities; athletic special events, football games and clean up)

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:


Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lbs. such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and works outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment, including lawn equipment. The employee may work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays while performing the duties of this job. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:


The terms of employment shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board’s salary schedule.

240 Day Work Schedule – 8 Hours per day

This is a grant funded position. Position may terminate upon end of grant. This position will not earn tenure as long as it is a grant funded position.

EVALUATION:


Performance evaluation shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
