General Summary: Under supervision, develops, interprets, implements and maintains appropriate data collection and department file and record keeping and information. Assists in compiling statistical information from a variety of reports and sources to prepare reports. May perform clerical support duties. Assigns diagnosis and procedure codes to medical records for the purpose of reimbursement, research and compliance with federal regulations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification, Certified Coding Specialist certification (CCS), ICD-10 coding course and CPT coding course or other equivalent education and experience required. Medical Terminology required. Anatomy and Physiology strongly preferred. Must complete AIS Coding by AAAM within 18 months of hire. Must have 18 to 24 months previous office experience with at least on year dealing directly with medical records and computer. Maintains current knowledge of ICD-10 coding principals and maintains current knowledge of CPT coding principals. Ability to function independently and as part of a team and thrive in a fast paced environment. Ability to use keyboard for data entry and retrieval and the ability to work at a computer for prolonged periods of time. Ability to use Microsoft Office Products. Ability to work additional hours if the work warrants it. Demonstrates effective communication skills in order to work with physician office staff. Ability to understand charge entry concepts for entering charges on specific services rendered. Ability to read medical records in a computerized medical record environment. Work requires sufficient interpersonal skills to interact effectively with professional personnel and the community. Must exercise a high level of discretion in dealing with sensitive materials. Analytical ability required in order to gather and interpret complex data. Must have knowledge of use and operation of standard office equipment (personal computer, work processor, typewriter, Dictaphone, copier) and the ability to perform at a satisfactory speed-accuracy rate. Approximately 3-6 months on-the-job training is needed to acquire familiarity with Medical Center and departmental policies and procedures.
