The Role

8 Rivers is seeking an experienced Static Equipment Subject Matter Expert (SME) to contribute to the development of our zero-emissions technology portfolio, from conception to launch. This role requires expertise in mechanical design principles, including Thermo-Fluid's and mechanics, with a focus on plate heat exchangers. The successful candidate will lead internal mechanical design aspects of novel technology development and commercial project execution in a fast-paced, innovative environment. Effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders and consultants is crucial, necessitating strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design and provide economic analyses of static equipment, including heat transfer equipment and pressure vessels (e.g., distillation columns, packing columns, scrubbers, etc.), based on process requirements.
  • Conduct complete thermal, fluid flow, and stress analysis for mechanical design.
  • Develop technology and equipment designs for novel processes, from concept to commercialization. 
  • Participate in the development, revision, and review of engineering documentation such as equipment data sheets, equipment lists, critical equipment RFPs, and manufacturing packages. 
  • Implement applicable codes and standards in equipment design for industrial applications. 
  • Perform safety-related calculations and provide subject matter input to safety reviews. 
  • Plan, coordinate, and manage day-to-day activities associated with the delivery of engineering services to meet project scope requirements. 
  • Execute routine and detailed engineering calculations using First Principles. 
  • Collaborate with external partners and vendors to develop and execute manufacturing plans.
  • Participate in static equipment shop inspections as required.

Essential Skillset, Education/Qualification, Certification Attainment

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (preferred).
  • Minimum 20 years of experience in mechanical design, specifically for heat transfer equipment and pressure vessels.
  • Experience designing static equipment at the R&D stage of technology lifecycle.
  • Professional Engineering license preferred. 
  • Proficiency in heat transfer modeling software with a fundamental understanding. 
  • Experience in HTRI is a plus.
  • Experience in stress analysis, pressure vessel design, and FEA. 
  • Experience conducting fabrication surveillance. 
  • Research and Development experience and an understanding of the stage-gate process. 
  • Combustion experience is a bonus. 
  • Experience with gas processing, industrial gases, syngas, H2 and/or CO2. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Excellent client-facing skills. 
  • Strong organizational skills. 
  • A demonstrable understanding of the project lifecycle.
  • Strong working knowledge of design codes including ASME B31.1, B31.3, and Section VIII, Div. 1 & 2, TEMA standards and API standards.
  • Experience working on projects in chemical, petrochemical or renewables industries as an Owner or Owner's representative at all post phases of a project (FEED, Detailed design, Construction, Commissioning and Start-up).
