PWC Careers is Hiring an ELECTRIC SUBSTATION TECH Near Fayetteville, NC

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: This class is responsible for performing routine work in the construction/repair/ maintenance of electrical substations/transformers. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, pushing/pulling wires, changing protective relays, checking voltmeters on battery charges for calibration, adding/removing capacitors, setting pull boxes; painting/testing/sanding/repairing/maintaining transformers; inspecting substations; repairing/troubleshooting failed/non-operational equipment on a 24 hour basis; performing general construction/concrete work/landscaping/spreading gravel; cleaning/painting/maintaining equipment; working with energized electrical systems in confined spaces; assisting in the installation/maintenance of substation equipment including regulators, circuit breakers, switchboards, batteries; testing of substation grids; performing periodic electrical/mechanical/chemical tests on substation equipment. Operates under direct supervision of the Substation Field Supervisor in accordance with established policies and procedures. Extended hours, and on-call availability are required. Performs related work as required. EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Landscaping/painting/grounding, and substation testing equipment, hand/power tools, boom truck, and other equipment as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures; working knowledge of the methods/procedures/materials/tools, and equipment used in the trade; ability to learn principles of electrical theory as applied to transformers/switches, etc; ability to read/interpret blue prints/schematics/ sketches; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to work in confined spaces; ability to perform a variety of heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions; ability to maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and a minimum of three (3) years of maintenance/modification of electrical facilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Functional Employment Test (FET) required. Must possess/maintain a valid North Carolina Class A (CDL) Driver’s License.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.

SAFETY HAZARDS: Inclement weather, hot/cold weather, storms, loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, oils, confined spaces, and other hazards associated with electrical work.

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: As required in the Public Works Commission’s Safety Manual.
