Middlebury Community Schools is Hiring a Building Assistant, 7.5 hrs/day [2024-2025 School Year] Near Middlebury, IN

***This position begins at the start of the 2024-25 school year.***

JOB GOALS: Provide assistance throughout the school building that will facilitate to provide a smooth functioning educational environment, which allows all students to take full advantage of the instructional programs and available resource materials.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS may include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

MAY INCLUDE OFFICE AND SCHOOL-WIDE DUTIES:

  1. Provide office assistance.
  2. Provide assistance as the office receptionist as needed.
  3. Recess duties daily.
  4. Responsible for daily building transportation notes.
  5. Responsible for daily attendance.
  6. Responsible for all building lamination needs.
  7. Responsible for gathering all enrollment packets and organizing them.
  8. Responsible for making all student name tags.
  9. Provide assistance with kindergarten round-up.
  10. Assist building secretary in taking inventory of supplies.
  11. Assume the duties of bookkeeper and/or building secretary in their absence.

MAY INCLUDE CLASSROOM DUTIES:

  1. Under supervision of licensed teacher and building principal, supervise classroom activities that directly or indirectly serve all students.
  2. Work with small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
  3. Assist individual students in need of special attention.
  4. Supervise drill work, guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work for assigned students as arranged by the teacher.
  5. Check notebooks, correct papers, supervise testing and make up work as needed.
  6. Create materials as needed.
  7. Tutor assigned students

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Assistants hired after January 8, 2006, must have:

- Completed two (2) years or more years of study at an institution of higher education; or

- Obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree; or

- Passed the Para Pro Test

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance

instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to speak effectively before groups of school employees, students or parents.

MATHEMATICAL SKILL:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Must be proficient in the use of computers for various office applications. Ability to type and use the machines, tools, equipment, and work aids that may be representative, but not all inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work, i.e., computer, copy machine, calculator, sorting machines, tools, charts, forms, ledgers, schedules, text books. Employee must maintain a positive relationship with other staff, parents, and students.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, and taste or smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities

required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The working environment is mainly indoors other than routine errands.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

187 days per year. Salary and benefits as per Classified Policy.

EVALUATION:

An evaluation will be done on the employee's performance on an annual basis.
