Elegen is blazing a path towards a biology-based economy with a highly innovative approach to DNA synthesis that delivers an industry leading length of 7kb in 7 business days with a 99.999% per base accuracy. Our multidisciplinary team of best-in-class biologists, chemists, hardware, and software engineers apply cutting-edge technologies and methods to solve critical bottlenecks in synthetic biology workflows to help our customers in pharma, biotech, agbio, and biomanufacturing streamline their work and realize the full potential of programmable biology.

This is an opportunity to join a rapidly growing company at an early stage and to have an impact on the development of its products, markets, processes, people, and culture.

We are seeking a molecular biology Senior Scientist, passionate and creative in advancing DNA assembly technologies as part of our R&D group. As a part of our team, you will play a central role in defining and implementing molecular biology strategies for scalable production of long, perfect synthetic DNA. You will conceive, develop, and transfer innovative molecular biology workflows for DNA assembly. You will collaborate with automation, bioinformatics, and manufacturing groups to build groundbreaking technologies for scalable DNA production.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, dedicated, and driven scientist looking to develop novel molecular biology processes at a uniquely innovative, rapidly moving, high impact start-up. In addition to working on cutting edge technology, you will help us establish a strong culture of mutual respect, integrity, and collaboration while working alongside some of Silicon Valley's best scientists and engineers.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Drive the development of high throughput DNA assembly protocols from early concept through validation and commercialization stages.
  • Design and execute hypothesis-driven, systematic experimental plans and interpret data using statistical analysis tools.
  • Develop analytical methodologies to aid product development and work closely with bioinformatics to develop sequencing-based QC techniques.
  • Support the transfer of molecular biology protocols to production.
  • Develop protocols into reproducible standard operating procedures suitable for commercial release and support product documentation.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, synthetic biology or a related field and 3 years of industrial experience.
  • Deep expertise in molecular biology techniques. Particularly PCR, molecular cloning, DNA analysis, DNA purification, and gene synthesis.
  • Strong track record of working in a highly collaborative environment on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Self-starter, with a strong passion for developing and implementing new molecular biology techniques.
  • Proficient in statistically rigorous design of experiments and data analysis using R, Python, JMP, Excel or similar.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • In-depth knowledge of PCR and molecular cloning troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of NGS methods, library preparation and data interpretation.
  • Previous experience with assay automation using liquid handling systems.
  • Previous experience with commercialization of molecular biology based assays.

Salary and Benefits:

The annual base salary compensation for this role, if based in California is: $135,000 - $165,000. Compensation may be different in other locations.
