Elegen is Hiring a Software Engineer, Testing & Development Near San Carlos, CA

Our expanding R&D team is seeking a talented and self-driven controls software engineer to bring our DNA synthesis instrument to new levels of performance and reliability. The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team. You will be able to comprehend, write, and test software for a variety of layers and domains, from low-level control and imaging algorithms, sensors, and actuators to high level business logic and workflows.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and test control software for a microfluidic DNA synthesis instrument.
  • Assist in integration testing and development of automated tests.
  • Help design self-test and calibration procedures for its manufacturing, deployment, and end use.
  • Collaborate with other R&D teams and end users to come up with improvements and fix deficiencies.
  • Assist production teams with testing and trouble-shooting.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or related engineering discipline combined with software experience. Graduate degree preferred.
  • Able to work onsite at our location in San Carlos.
  • Familiarity with C/C and Python or C# programming languages.
  • Interest in developing full life-cycle, production-quality control software for complex hardware.
  • Willingness to help develop and test high-level software layers (business logic, state control, and the user interface) as well as lower-level machine vision and hardware control algorithms.
  • Assist with testing strategy and infrastructure for the overall system, with many testing challenges falling beyond the software itself in the domains of chemistry, optics, and microfluidics.
  • Familiarity with object-oriented design principles.
  • Willingness to learn and conscientiously follow our team’s software development practices, including adhering to coding standards, developing automated tests, and consistently achieving well-structured, clean implementations.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment, regularly collaborating with domain experts.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • 1-3 years of experience in a start-up environment.
  • Experience developing multi-threaded and real-time control software.
  • Embedded software experience (C, C )
  • Familiarity with automated testing strategies and frameworks.
  • Knowledge in machine vision, real-time motion control, electronics and/or microfluidics.
  • Experience with Linux, QT, OpenCV, Numpy, git, Docker, Jira.

Salary and Benefits:

The annual base salary compensation for this role, if based in California is: $115,000 - $140,000. Compensation may be different in other locations. Final compensation also includes bonus, equity and benefits. Specific offer packages are determined by multiple factors, including candidate skill, experience, expertise, and location.
