University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men is currently seeking candidates for a World Language Teacher position for the 2023-2024 school year.

Company Description :

The mission of the University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men is to establish a culture that celebrates diversity and where all boys thrive academically and holistically. University Prep develops this culture through small classes, student empowerment, personalized attention from teachers and school staff, and a consistent focus on successful instructional outcomes. University Prep provides opportunities and experiences that balance the academic, social, physical, and creative development of young men. Consistent emphasis is placed on preparation for life after high school, a 100% graduation rate, and all students being college or workplace ready.

TEACHER SUPPORT : University Prep has a strong operational team with student managers at each grade level who support student achievement through a disciplinary model that includes students’ families. Administration provides all necessary instructional materials and support in a coaching model designed to build teacher confidence and competence. In-house professional development fosters teacher professional growth and is focused on increasing student achievement. Our graduating classes have exceeded a rate of 94% and all of our seniors have been accepted at 2 or 4 year colleges or training programs.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF UNIT :

To help students learn subject matter and/or skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able and responsible men.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Plans an instruction program that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Creates an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of students.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and—in harmony with the goals—establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  • Plans, prepares and delivers classroom instruction using a variety of presentation methods to keep students engaged and to meet their instructional needs.
  • Embraces and utilizes technology in lesson planning and instruction.
  • Collaborates with the instructional team to develop and continuously improve curriculum; Accepts feedback and incorporates improvements into lesson plans.
  • Assesses student/class learning needs and progress to adjust teaching methods and content as needed; Works with students individually to help them overcome specific learning challenges.
  • Fosters and maintains open communication with parents, administration and school counselors.
  • Evaluates the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration; Evaluates student performance, prepares interim and final report cards.
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (administration, school counselors, etc.) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and/or direction.
  • Manages student classroom behavior to promote a safe and optimal learning environment; Reports incidents for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to state law and school policies.
  • Attends department and faculty meetings and contributes to meaningful discussion regarding curriculum, instruction and evaluation.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities including but not limited to homeroom, study hall, lunch duty, substitute teaching, etc. as needed.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Follows State Education Department's regulations.
  • Any additional task that may come up.

  • You own and empower learning. Take daily ownership of your own learning and the learning of your students in order to model empowerment and a growth mindset even in the face of ongoing challenges. Engage in productive struggle and teach specific actions, skills, and strategies to overcome learning and mindset barriers in self, colleagues, and students.
  • You are an executor and analyzer. Go beyond planning and researching to execute consistently within an ongoing continuous improvement in all areas in order to maximize effectiveness and learning. Analyze results daily to ensure authentic learning and progress towards goals in all areas.
  • You prioritize school safety first. Supervise and maintain the physical safety of self, students, colleagues, and families at all times. Seek support and assistance as needed for the physical and mental health of self and others.
  • You are adaptive and humble. Seek ways to improve through feedback, service leadership, and flexibility.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • To be successful as a World Language teacher, you should be passionate about teaching it.
  • Fluency in the world language
  • Experience teaching language other than English
  • Commitment to the success of students
  • Confidence, and compassion that prepares and inspires young men to achieve the highest level of success in college, in career, and life after school.
  • Well-established communication and collaboration skills and a desire to work on a start-up team
  • Exceptional willingness to both learn and lead through feedback
  • Mastery of and enthusiasm for the subject matter as well as teaching across disciplines
  • BA/BS from an accredited institution required; MA/M.Ed. highly desired
  • Experience with 13 to 18 year old’s in an urban educational setting highly desired
  • Relevant New York state teaching certification desired
  • Computer skills: Strong skills, including fluency with Google productivity tools
  • Language skills: fluency in English/Spanish required
  • Reasoning ability: very high skills in defining problems, collecting data, drawing conclusions, and deal with abstract concepts
  • Physical demands: ability to regularly stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, and talk/hear; occasionally lifting/moving up to 15 pounds; no special vision requirements
