What You’ll Do:

This position will be responsible for a variety of activities directed toward the overall success of the Street Outreach Program. The core responsibility is to engage youth who may be in unsafe situations and at risk of sexual exploitation. In this role the outreach worker will provide basic needs; provide preliminary assessments and referrals; and provide crisis intervention when assisting young people to make safer decisions within. This position also has the opportunity to work directly with street-based outreach and occasion, it’s drop-in center for youth.

Your Responsibilities in the Role:

Responsible for outreach activities at both designated sites and at the agency’s drop-in-center, including provision of written materials, health products, and referral resources. This includes conducting outreach outdoors in various locations in the community, weather permitting.

  • May occasionally assist in maintaining operations for the Drop In Center, keep track of supplies necessary to keep Drop In Center running, assist in scheduled program activities, oversee life skill activities
  • Participate in outreach activities at designated sites including provision of written materials, health products, and referral resources
  • Provide education and prevention information for young people and education/employment referrals.
  • Provide crisis intervention services including referrals for emergency housing and medical assistance.
  • Responsible for case notes and data tracking to ensure that program standards for documentation and record-keeping are followed.
  • Maintain adequate supplies of all flyers other items distributed during outreach
  • Participate in periodic evaluations of the program
  • Assist in educating the community regarding the mission of street outreach
  • Participate in program and agency level staff meetings
  • Utilize a strength-based, solution-focused approach when working with youth, families, staff members, and members of the community; able to climb two flights of stairs, lift 40 pounds, stand on feet for several hours; walk the equivalent of three city blocks.
  • Any other responsibilities assigned by the Street Outreach Supervisor

Position Requirements:

  • Experience working with at-risk teens and young adults.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Working toward a bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, or related field preferred but not required.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license, use of personal vehicle, and proof of insurance coverage as required by agency.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Familiarity with child abuse and neglect issues; health/lifestyle issues; stress management, teen/young adult issues; familiar with community resources; ability to clearly communicate orally and in written form; ability to accurately assess situations; able to organize and implement plans.
  • Technology Skills: Basic computer skills, Office 365
  • Communication Skills: Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Leadership/ Behaviors: Familiarity with child abuse and neglect issues including runaway/homeless population, knowledge of area social service agencies, strong leadership skills, and the commitment to continual learning and quality performance.

Other Important Information:

Pay/Salary: $15 per hour; $1 differential on weekends

Reports To: Street Outreach Supervisor

Core Hours: 14-22 hours weekly, hours may include evening/weekend

Typical Work Week: Tuesday, Wednesday, and every other Saturday

Travel: Will travel to various sites in the county. YSB provides a vehicle.
