We do this through offering an array of services, including a Street Outreach program that serves youth who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless, and a 24/7 emergency shelter, Safe Station, that provides safe shelter to runaway and homeless youth, and youth placed by the Department of Child Services or juvenile probation.

What You’ll Do:

  • As a Street Outreach Worker, you will be responsible for a variety of activities directed toward the overall success of Street Outreach. The core responsibility is to provide community, street-based outreach and operate the Drop In Center to engage youth who may be at risk of homelessness, sexual exploitation, and lack basic needs and safety. You will also provide individual assessments, referrals, crisis intervention, and any other duties assigned by the Street Outreach Supervisor.
  • As a Youth Care Worker for Safe Station, you will assist in taking the youth on recreational outings 2-3 times per week, in addition to other duties assigned by the Safe Station Supervisor. These duties may include supervising the activities of the youth, assisting with youth intakes, and ensuring that all policies and guidelines are followed for a safe living environment.

Your Accountabilities in the Role:

Safe Station: 

  • Provide recreational programming and services, facilitate individual and group life skills development, and make referrals or contacts social agencies as needed.
  • Oversee daily operations and enforce all rules, policies, and procedures of the shelter and its residents.
  • Screen, assess, and document incoming calls and complete intakes of residents.
  • Complete all necessary case notes, statistics, and other documentation as needed.
  • Perform various assignments and helps in other areas to ensure YSB program and team goals are met.

Street Outreach:

  • Responsible for outreach activities at both designated sites and at the agency’s drop-in-center, including provision of written materials, health products, and referral resources.
  • Provide education and prevention information for young people and education/employment referrals.
  • Provide crisis intervention services including referrals for emergency housing and medical assistance.
  • Responsible for case notes and data tracking to ensure that program standards for documentation and record-keeping are followed.
  • Utilize a strength-based, solution-focused approach when working with youth, families, staff members, and members of the community; able to climb two flights of stairs, lift 40 pounds, stand on feet for several hours; walk the equivalent of three city blocks.

Position Requirements:

  • Experience working with teens and young adults.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, or related field preferred but not required. 
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license, use of personal vehicle, and proof of insurance coverage as required by agency.
  • Familiarity with child abuse and neglect issues; health/lifestyle issues; stress management, teen/young adult issues; familiar with community resources; ability to clearly communicate orally and in written form; ability to accurately assess situations; able to organize and implement plans.
  • Technology Skills: Basic computer skills, Office 365
  • Communication Skills: Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Leadership/ Behaviors: Familiarity with child abuse and neglect issues including runaway/homeless population, knowledge of area social service agencies, strong leadership skills, and the commitment to continual learning and quality performance.

Other Important Information:

Pay/Salary: $17.00 per hour

Reports To: Safe Station Supervisor & Street Outreach Supervisor

Core Hours: Safe Station: Saturdays & Sundays, 11a-7p; Street Outreach: 2p-8p throughout the week

Typical Work Week: Saturday, Sunday and varied times during the week

Travel:  Will travel to various sites in the county. YSB provides a vehicle.
