Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by fostering, facilitating, and supporting the use of proven instructional strategies and technologies to enhance teaching and learning in distance learning programs. Specifically, the Instructional Designer (ID) provides course design and course development services to the College of Graduate and Continuing Studies using best practices and quality standards, effective and innovative instructional strategies and established and emerging tools to deliver quality online courses that promote student engagement and success.

Remote work may be authorized.

Essential Functions

  • Drives online course design process with Subject Matter Experts/Course Developers (SMEs/CDs) and development team to ensure courses are designed and aligned to clear and measurable learning outcomes.
  • Designs online courses based on intended content and consistent with adult learning theory.
  • Conducts and participates in course design planning sessions and scoping meetings to envision course design, develop course blueprints/maps, and resolve development issues within the constraints of development timelines.
  • Builds online course blueprints/maps in collaboration with SMEs/CDs to ensure alignment with course outcomes and learning objectives.
  • Designs learning activities, instructional materials and assessments that align with course outcomes and learning objectives in collaboration with SMEs/CDs.
  • Analyzes and structures course content, learning activities and assessments based on best practices, Quality Matters standards, and instructional design principles.
  • Conducts quality assurance reviews.
  • Designs interactive learning experiences, instructional materials and selects media in collaboration with SMEs/CDs that create opportunities for meaningful engagement and real-world application that address learning diversity and accessibility guidelines.
  • Identifies, evaluates, and applies appropriate tools and techniques to best deliver universally designed interactive content in a variety of formats including print, graphics, audio, video, and multimedia on a variety of devices.
  • Orients new course developers in the College's course design model (Design For Success), including management and maintenance of the CD orientation course and mentoring CDs through the course design process.
  • Mentors and provides expertise to the Instructional Development team to build high quality engaging courses in the learning management system.
  • Documents and maintains instructional design processes and templates.
  • Applies project management skills to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Keeps up to date with new and emerging technologies (software and hardware) in the online teaching and learning field. Facilitates idea sharing to explore new tools for online teaching and learning.
  • Builds course masters in the learning management system using best practices and approved instructional development standards and processes to incorporate instructional course content and select appropriate delivery tools. Maintains designated program(s).

  • Communicates with employees, students, and others in a respectful and clear manner.
  • Serves on University committees, councils, workgroups, or other designated bodies as assigned.
  • Achieves, maintains proficiency in, and utilizes computers, telephones, and other job-related equipment, including related systems and software.
  • Speaks, reads, and writes in English.
  • Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree with at least 3 years' experience in areas related to instructional design, curriculum and instruction, or related field.
  • Teaching experience in an online education setting (in higher education preferred).
  • Experience with online learning pedagogy, application of learning design theory, e-learning applications and learning management systems. Experience with Moodle a plus.
  • Experience with and application of instructional design theories and models.
  • Knowledge and application of best practices and innovations in learning design and instructional technology.
  • Proficiency in standard office software applications, web development technologies (web page editors, HTML5, scripting, graphics).
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook).
  • Able to sit, squat, reach, push, pull, and manipulate related equipment; lift 15 pounds; travel outdoors to various parts of the campus
  • Work some evening or weekend hours

  • Indoor work at a computer workstation
  • Low level of exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes.
