Harris County is Hiring a Remote Pretrial Officer - Enhanced Supervision Division (Part Time/Remote)

Under general supervision, the Pretrial Officer is responsible for supervising client’s compliance with release conditions and providing the courts with information to address noncompliance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Case Documentation: Maintains accurate case notes documenting supervision activities and contacts.
  • Client Release and Supervision: Enforces conditions of release from the established requirements and continually monitors the client's ability to comply.
  • Vendor Oversight and Community Collaboration: Initiates, researches, verifies, and monitors the services clients receive from vendors. Collaborates with personnel in criminal justice, representatives of the legal community, and others to achieve department goals.
  • Client Assessment: Reviews monitoring reports to ascertain client activity and compliance of bond conditions.
  • Court Reporting: Apprises court about violations and testifies in court when needed.
  • Reporting: Documents and maintains information the department needs to prepare monthly reports.
  • Customer Service: Responds to inquiries from clients, the public and the courts about the pretrial process.
  • Performs any other related duties as may be assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Counseling, or other closely related field from an accredited university or college or Bachelor's degree in any other field of study from an accredited university or college with either:
    • One (1) year of full-time paid experience in a Criminal Justice setting OR
    • Two (2) years of volunteer experience in a Criminal Justice or Social Sciences setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge about the local criminal justice system.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to organize tasks and set priorities.
  • Excellent documentation skills.
  • Ability to perform tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Demonstrated tolerance for diverse populations.
  • Is a self-starter, self-motivator with a focus on task completion.
  • Ability to sit on a computer terminal for an extended period.
  • Able to navigate multiple computer programs at one time.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid driver's license (Texas upon hire).
  • Ability to obtain clearance based on a criminal history background check.
  • Required to present evidence of a TB skin test prior to employment. Documentation of yearly TB screen required.
  • Transportation: If scheduled to come into the office
  • Drug screening: Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, all applicants are screened for the presence of illegal drugs.
  • Must reside in Harris County, Texas, and/or its contiguous counties.
  • Reliable internet with plug-in ethernet/network cable.

Applicants for this position will be subject to a criminal background check that includes being fingerprinted. This applies to any position with network access to Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) or access to an area where CJIS is received, maintained, or stored either manually or electronically (i.e., custodian, maintenance).
 
 Automatic Disqualification:

  • Convictions, probation, or deferred adjudication for any Felony, and any Class A Misdemeanor.
  • Convictions, probation, or deferred adjudication for a Class B Misdemeanor, if within the previous 10 years.
  • Open arrest for any criminal offense (Felony or Misdemeanor).
  • Family Violence conviction.

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Regular Part-time

  • 25 Hours Per Week | Remote Work (95 %) 

  • Evenings/Nights/Weekends/Holidays | Days off vary 

  • Hours will be discussed during departmental interview

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Working in an office setting with close proximity to clients that are under our supervision.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
  • Office climate can vary in temperature.
  • Travel between office locations including the Criminal Justice Center and other buildings located in the downtown area.
  • Limited instate travel.
  • Minimum lifting of files and or equipment of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally
  • Repetitive typing.
  • Equipment:
    • Department issued laptop.
    • Department issued cell phone.

Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
