Requirements:

Must be U.S. Citizen or provide a Certificate of Naturalization.

  • Degree: Certificate.
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited Psychiatric Technician Program; or completion of an equivalent education and experience that meets the requirement of the American Association of Psychiatric Technicians or completion of education and experience as a behavioral science specialist/technician in the United States military and proof of having completed an Armed Forces course involving psychiatric technician training or civilian course from an accredited school in the care of behavioral health patients.
  • Experience: One year of experience as a Psychiatric Technician after graduation.

Duties:

Inpatient Care for Acute Psychiatric and Intermediate Units:

  • Assist in counseling and orient patients to the unit procedures and policies.
  • Perform ward searches; monitor use of dangerous items. Answer telephone calls and relay pertinent information to providers if required.
  • Assist in a variety of treatment modalities including but not limited to biofeedback, stress management, and group therapy.
  • Coordinate and perform routine training in prevention and management of assaultive behavior.
  • Perform routine ward procedures for admission, discharges, and patient transfers.
  • Manage agitated patients; identify and report symptoms of homicidal or suicidal patient; perform line of sight one (1) on one (1) observations.
  • Understand the rules of confidentiality as applies to patient and health care provider during all aspects of care; instruct personnel in psychiatric patient rights.
  • Utilize sound psychiatric nursing theoretical and practical approaches in providing patient care.
  • Assist in the management of a therapeutic milieu; providing structure, social support, patient education, safety, and social skills training.
  • Monitor, escort, and/or act as a therapeutic participant in patient activities in the inpatient unit and outpatient psychiatric programs.
  • Provide care for patients utilizing proper infection control and safety techniques as planned and/or ordered. Document per policy and notify the mental health provider or nurse in charge of any abnormal or unusual findings in a timely manner.
  • Provide therapeutic assessment and interview skills to elicit accurate and concise accounts of the patient’s condition. Document patient care using proper terminology and in accordance with Military Treatment Facilities (MTF) policy.
  • Utilize sound judgment and crisis intervention skills, including physical restraint, to prevent or reverse situations which may be potentially harmful. Follow command and unit specific policies for Seclusion/Restraint, elopement and management of the assaulted patient.
  • Maintain information of psychotropic medications including actions, side effects and common dosages. Follow command policies and procedures for the administration and documentation of scheduled and PRN medications. Inform the mental health provider or nurse in charge of any errors, discrepancies, or adverse patient reactions.
  • Screen patients to determine presenting problems and priority of appointment. This may entail telephone triage or in-person evaluation. Perform basic assessment procedures, including initial screening evaluation and standardized psychological testing. Assist credentialed providers with identifying mental health diagnosis and treatment strategies, as well as providing patient education.
  • Assist in providing specialized treatment and rehabilitation of mental health patients. Assist in conducting individual and group therapy sessions. Observe, monitor, report, and record patient interaction and progress. Institute precautionary measures to prevent patient injuries due to suicide, homicide, or elopement. Perform verbal and manual restraint and apply mechanical restraints as needed.
  • Present or facilitate a variety of health and wellness programs, including stress management, suicide intervention, and smoking cessation. Conduct various programs in support of the clinic.
  • Coordinate with other base agencies and MTFs regarding specialized care, treatment, and administrative functions. Contact military or community agencies to obtain collateral information. Explain and interpret mental health services and procedures to access care to patients and commands. Assist in or arrange for patient referral to other facilities for alternate level of care.
  • Provide care to mentally ill or emotionally disturbed patients and participate in rehabilitation and treatment programs.
  • Measure and record patient's general physical condition, such as pulse, temperature, and respiration, to provide daily information. Observe patients to detect behavior patterns and report observations to medical/nursing staff.
  • Complete the restraint training course that is provided by the MTF upon arrival and yearly.
  •  Outpatient Care:
  • Transcribe physician’s orders.
  • Develop a therapeutic relationship with psychiatric patients; observe patient progress during treatment.
  • Escort patients safely on and off the unit and know the patient management for elopement risks.
  • Monitor patient safety; be able to do physical restraint procedures such as applying manual and mechanical restraints.
  • Manage agitated patients; identify and report symptoms of homicidal or suicidal patient; perform line of sight one (1) on one (1) observations.
  • Maintain all records required on patients to include data entry and retrieval on CHCS and computer information systems (CIS) computer systems.
  • Perform a range of diagnostic support duties which include but is not limited to drawing blood for lab studies; collect and label specimens; take vital signs; and assist the doctor in a variety of diagnostic examinations.
  • Understand the rules of confidentiality as applied to patient and health care provider during all aspects of care; instruct personnel in psychiatric patient rights.
  • Respond to emergency situations within area of competence and initiate appropriate action and documentation (restraint calls, fire calls, and disaster situations).
  • Monitor and discontinue IV fluids as directed if certified.
  • Operate the outpatient front desk areas; assist patients with questions and information; offer courteous and attentive assistance. Follow the Command’s mission and values of Service, Professionalism, Teamwork, Respect, and Compassion.
  • Schedule patient appointments through the CHCS computer system. Coordinate and assist the Primary Care Provider in contacting patients who miss appointments.
  • Ensure that all records are properly maintained, constructed, and secured in a controlled access area.
  • Dispose of the Secondary Convenience Record after maintaining for three (3) years.
  • Prepare and pull all outpatient records for scheduled appointments.
  • Perform End of Day processing in accordance with local instructions.
  • Perform psychiatric testing/screening evaluations if certified and as directed.

Start date: 

  • As soon as possible pending Federal Security Clearance process completion (typically 4-6 weeks after initiation)

Schedule:

  • The Inpatient Mental Health Unit operates 365 days a year, 7 days a week, 24 hours per day. The HCW shall normally provide services for six 12.5 hour periods, (to include an uncompensated 30 minute meal break) and one 8.5 hour period (to include an uncompensated 30 minute meal break) per two-week period. In no instance will an individual HCW be required to provide services in excess of 80 hours per 2-week period.

Ability to commute:

  • Reliably transportation is required and expected for commuting to and from the work site.
