POSITION DESCRIPTION

Unit Manager- Subacute/ Short Term Rehab. Unit

Department: Nursing

Status: Exempt

FUNCTION:

The Nurse Unit Manager is responsible for managing the staffing needs and ensuring quality patient care on the assigned unit.

REPORTS TO:

Director of Nursing Services

SUPERVISES:

Day-to-day clinical activities of nursing staff on all shifts on the unit, including:

Registered Nurses

Licensed Practical Nurses

Certified Nursing Assistants

Nursing Assistants

QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Valid license as a Registered Nurse in the state of practice.

Minimum of three (3) years of nursing experience. Supervision, training and/or experience in serving the same age/type of patient population served by this facility.

Minimum of one (1) year experience in nursing administration.

Knowledge of regulatory standards and compliance requirements.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide direct patient care including:

Conduct and document thorough assessments of patient’s medical status upon admission and throughout the patient’s stay.

Assist in development and implementation of an individualized treatment plan for each assigned patient.

Comply with evaluation, treatment and documentation guidelines described in Maristhill Care Maps.

Complete required documentation in an accurate and timely manner.

Attend and participate in rehabilitation team conferences concerning patient progress, problems and needs.

Assist in hiring unit nursing personnel.

Provide supervision/counseling as needed to unit nursing staff.

Facilitate problem solving and open communications with the unit nursing staff.

Assist with completion of annual performance appraisals for all unit nursing personnel, including competence checklists.

Act as a resource person for nursing personnel.

Work with patients, families and other staff, as needed, to resolve issues/grievances.

Act in compliance with Maristhill, regulatory and professional standards and guidelines.

Attend and participate in department/facility meetings, as required.

Actively participate in the quality improvement process for the facility.

Access continuing education opportunities appropriate to discipline and responsibilities in order to maintain clinical currency.

Adheres to facility policies and procedures and participates in facility quality improvement and safety programs.
