Supervises and renders total nursing care to residents within an assigned unit. Works with the Director of Nursing and is responsible for nursing personnel under his/her supervision. Observes and reports all symptoms and conditions of the resident.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides appropriate, holistic resident assessment.
  • Accurately records nursing notes on any changes in the resident’s medical, emotional or physical changes.
  • Administers medications and treatments as prescribed by the physician and notes reactions.
  • Accompanies the physician when visiting residents; sets up treatment and prepares equipment for that visitation.
  • Reports accurately any significant physical, social, psychological and environmental changes/deterioration of resident’s status to supervisor and physician.
  • Demonstrates appropriate documentation on nursing care plans.
  • Performs only the duties that he/she has been taught and passed competency in
  • -within the scope of professional nursing practices.
  • Understands Resident Bill of Rights, especially the right to privacy and strict confidentiality of all personal records, medical history and information pertaining to that resident.
  • Assumes responsibility for operations on his/her assigned unit, including supervision of assigned PCA’s
  • Assigns, delegates, and directs staff.
  • Demonstrates ability to appraise staff.
  • Interprets nursing home policies to staff, residents and their families.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

    Additional Job Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Follows nursing policies and procedures of a nursing home in accordance with the Policy and Procedure Manual.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of Dept. of Health regulations.
    • Demonstrates and practices standards of conduct in the areas of quality of care, human resources, compliance with laws, communication, and confidentiality.
    • Observes and practices Infection Control and Standard Precautions in accordance with St. Mary’s Villa Campus standards.
    • Utilizes equipment in a safe and appropriate manner as designated by facility policy. Observes and promptly report equipment safety hazards or defective/malfunctioning equipment or supplies.
    • Demonstrates good body mechanics when performing care.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of fire drills and all other emergency preparedness plans.
    • Follows care plan and advises supervisor of any changes noted in residents.
    • Demonstrates sensitivity to issues of fraud and abuse.
    • Attends mandatory in-services and other in-services in order to update and enhance present knowledge and skills.
    • Works unit he/she is assigned to and is flexible with staff scheduling needs.

      • Utilizes equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. Observes and promptly report equipment safety hazards or defective/malfunctioning equipment or supplies.
      • Adheres to the policies and procedures set forth in the Personnel Handbook.

      Qualifications:

      Education/Knowledge:

      A graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Current registration with the State Board of Nursing Examiners, or has a temporary practice permit. Must continue to receive in-service training in special areas pertaining to residents’ needs.

      Good knowledge of general and geriatric nursing theory and nursing practice including those basic knowledge relating to nursing, drugs, biological, physical, social, and medical sciences, and their application-for a better understanding of patient care problems. Has the ability to manage and direct nursing personnel under their supervision. Will act as a teacher/instructor to the nursing assistants to assure proper care to meet the specific needs of the residents.

      Working Conditions:

      Long-term care environment; direct contact with residents and families; job involves being on one’s feet most of the work shift; ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs; frequent pushing, pulling, stooping and reaching; exposure to blood and body fluids; ability to safely move/lift residents; exposure to information which must remain confidential.
