Role Summary:

Lead the Insurance team (inclusive of Sr. Risk Insurance Specialist and Injury Specialist) with responsibility for protecting assets of Volkswagen Group of America (and its subsidiaries including Financial Services) and Volkswagen Group Canada (and its subsidiaries).

Plan, design and implement the overall risk management process which includes: leading the insurance renewal process; evaluating the total cost of risk; managing existing agreements and services; and managing the claims process; and overseeing the budget for insurance spend which is over $50 million annually.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and execution of the insurance renewal process.
  • Collection and analysis of underwriting and exposure data thereby allowing insurance policy design, prices, letters of credit and endorsements to be negotiated.
  • Determine the organization’s overall limits, self-insured retentions, deductibles and program structure.
  • Ensure necessary insurance programs are in place and leveraged throughout the renewal process.
  • Evaluate the total cost of risk through the selection and implementation of measures that control and mitigate organizational risk including activities to avoid or transfer risks.
  • Manage the data flow to facilitate enforcement and improvement of the safety/risk control process.
  • Responsible for oversight of existing agreements and over 35 consultant personnel
  • Review the insurance program design, verification, premium payment and allocation.
  • Analyze invoices received from insurance carriers or administration companies.
  • Analyze current contracts for vulnerability and, if necessary, make decisions to strengthen the organization’s risk position.
  • Manage the insurance broker, carrier, and third party administration contracts. Ensure their costs and services are competitive in the marketplace.
  • Interview potential business partners and determine their ability to service the organization’s short and long-term needs.
  • Build effective relationships with related service providers such as insurance carriers, investigative firms, brokers, and third party administrators.
  • Ensure all vehicles are properly insured in all USA states and jurisdictions, as well as Canada.
  • Provide proof of insurance liability coverage meeting each jurisdiction’s financial responsibility requirements and provide to each company car driver
  • Manage the claims process to mitigate organizational risk. Work with insurance companies and third party administrators.
  • Respond to adjuster questions.
  • Utilize any available information to determine settlement offers, counter claims or denial decisions.
  • Make well-informed and often quick judgments regarding settlements and reserves.
  • Conduct semi-annual claim reviews with representatives from broker, insurer, and 3rd party administrator.
  • Mitigate the losses in workers compensation, utilizing insurer-approved panels of physicians, light duty, and nurse practitioners to assist in facilitating work-related medical care.
  • Coordinate, develop and expand all global industrial insurance projects within the USA and Canada.
  • Adapt to new requirements within organization.
  • Escalate anticipated risk with mitigation and contingency options to management.
  • Manage regulatory and compliance changes for insurance and obligor companies.
  • Review all contracts and future contract changes with legal & compliance teams.
  • Assist with the education of the sales teams and recommend changes to existing structures and programs, continually develop new programs that will support and enhance VW and VCI profitability and dealer engagement
  • Develop annual business plans for each insurance and service program based upon strategic input from internal partners to better understand the business and inherent risk

Qualifications:

Years of Experience:

  • 10 years’ experience with insurance products, and services related to insurance products (claims, filings evidence of insurance (EOI), etc.
  • Experience as an insurance broker, underwriter, or claims administrator

Education - Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • ARM designation

Education - Desired:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Insurance Certification, AIS, CPCU

Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to make well-informed and often quick judgments.
  • The ability to communicate risk management concepts and insurance precepts at all levels (from the back room to the board room) to facilitate understanding of the needs of the team and its impact of the entire organization
  • Ability to build sustainable relationships with colleagues, internal partners (including senior management), and external partners (e.g. insurance providers).
  • Influencing and negotiation skills, assertive when needed.
  • Work within global processes with different requirements and guidelines.
  • Ability to multi-task and organize with multiple projects/ tasks at one time.

  • Effective analytical and conceptual skills to drive solutions.

Specialized Skills - Required:

  • Thorough knowledge of the USA/Canada insurance business.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of market trends to be able to develop new and innovative product approaches.
  • Experience purchasing insurance coverage for Property, Casualty and Marine. Inclusive within casualty is automobile liability, workers compensation coverage, commercial liability coverage, Directors and Officer (D&0) coverage, cyber-liability and business travel insurance.
  • Experience building the insurance tower with the providers to ensure proper coverage at the lowest price.
  • Proven negotiation experience working with insurance providers.
  • Experience with claims adjustment process.

Specialized Skills - Desired:

  • Knowledge of Dealer insurance programs as it relates to the supply pipeline for both auto and parts
  • Experience managing 3rd party Administrators (TPA’s) for industrial insurance (property, casualty, marine) as well as ancillary dealer programs
  • Experience setting up Obligor & Insurance structures
  • Experience with insurance migration projects
  • Strong insurance knowledge and experience of the regulatory and compliance environment

Work Flexibility:

  • Ability to travel as needed
