Fond du Lac County is Hiring a Laborer Near Fond du Lac, WI

Description

The Highway Department is responsible for both County and State Highway Maintenance which requires individuals to be on call 24 hours / 7 days a week.

Candidates must possess a valid Wisconsin commercial driver's license (CDL) with Class A, B, & D with Endorsements N (Tanker), is required.

As well as the ability to legally operate CMV's with Air Brakes, Manual Transmissions, Tractor / Trailers and Tank Cargo (No restrictions such as L, Z, E, or O) is a prerequisite for employment.

Previous experience involving manual labor, concrete work, asphalt work, operating dump trucks and heavy equipment, as well as demonstrated familiarity and skill in use of a variety of hand and power tools is preferred.

Successful completion of a pre-employment drug and alcohol test are required.

Examples of Duties

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are critical for this position. These are not to be seen as exclusive, and other duties may be assigned.

  • Operates equipment such as dump trucks, sweepers, tractors / mowers, trailers, loaders, rollers, etc.
  • Performs labor work, shovels, erects and removes snow fences, etc. Picks up litter and debris; works independently or with a work crew.
  • Maintains, cleans, and washes equipment, vehicles, and facilities.
  • Services : change oil, grease, and fuel; and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, works with the mechanics as necessary.
  • Completes and submits accurate and legible records of time, location, materials, and equipment used on each project.
  • Follows safety rules and guidelines as established by, but not limited to County and / or State / Federal law.
  • Plows snow from highways, applying chlorides and abrasives as necessary.
  • Maintains grounds adjacent to highway facilities, planting, weed control, cutting grass, landscaping, etc.
  • Road crack filling, pot hole repair, brush and tree cutting and chipping, flagging, weed wacking, concrete cutting, air hammering, etc.

Typical Qualifications

Required or Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of and ability to operate and maintain variety of vehicles, trucks (tri-axle, quad axle, 5 yard, etc), tractors, mowers and light equipment.
  • Knowledge or ability to perform highway maintenance including manual labor, tree and brush removal, crack filling, pot hole repair, asphalt installation, concrete installation, sign repair, line striping, flagging, landscaping, culvert installation and maintenance, plowing, debris pickup, cleaning, etc.
  • Ability to operate variety of hand tools including shovels, rakes, brooms, chain saws, weed wackers, chop saws, concrete saws, drills, etc.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in equipment operation.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, under traffic and cope with distracting vibrations, fumes, dust, extended hours, holidays, etc.
  • Ability to organize and maintain accurate and complete time cards.
  • Demonstrated ability to comply with appropriate safety regulations.
  • Ability to work semi-independently making sound decisions using good judgment.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with co-workers, county officials and officers, general public, etc.
  • Ability to walk, bend, stoop, lift, carry; push, pull, and otherwise move objects up to 75 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally, understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics.
  • Be interested in developing expertise in operation of various heavy equipment, including dozers, motor graders, excavators, gradall, paver, etc.
  • Willing to be assigned out of the various garages throughout Fond du Lac County.
  • Willing to work overtime as needed and be within ¾ hour (45 minutes) from Fond du Lac County Highway Garage assigned.

Education / Certifications / Experience Requirements

  • Graduate from high school or G.E.D. preferred.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License Class A, B, C, D with endorsement N (Tanker) is required. As well as the ability to legally operate CMV's with Air Brakes, Manual Transmissions, Tractor / Trailers and Tank Cargo (No restrictions such as L, Z, E, or O)
  • Or, any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the required variety of highway maintenance work.

Supplemental Information

Summer Hours are Monday-Thursday from 6am-4pm.
