City of Monterey is Hiring an Engineering Technician Near Monterey, CA

DESCRIPTION: 
The City of Monterey's Public Works Department is seeking a full-time Engineering Technician. This role involves offering technical support through the development of project specifications and preliminary designs. The Engineering Technician will primarily serve as a coordinator for various projects, overseeing tasks such as survey work, permitting, and utilities coordination, in direct support of engineers and project managers.

Application Process
 A limited number of applicants who clearly show that they most closely meet the needs of this position in terms of training, experience, education, and other job-related characteristics will be accepted to participate in the selection process. This process will include evaluation and initial screening of the standard on-line City application to determine which candidates progress to the next phase of the recruitment process. The subsequent selection process may include a written test/written exercise, performance exercise, panel interview, and a final departmental interview. As a condition of employment, the selected candidate may be required to successfully pass a physical exam including a drug screen, a Livescan fingerprint background check, and a reference check. The Human Resources Department reserves the right to make changes to components of the examination process.
 
Candidates who successfully complete all phases of this recruitment process will be placed on an eligibility list. The eligibility list is active for 12-months and may be used to fill additional positions including lower-level positions determined to have similar duties and requirements.

The Position:
Under general supervision, performs basic engineering, complex drafting and related technical work for a wide variety of public works projects, occasionally acts as a member of a survey party, and performs related technical tasks as required.
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: performs difficult drafting on “AutoCAD” and in ink and pencil including preparation of construction drawings, basic designs and cost estimates for streets, sewers, storm drains, traffic control improvements, parks, buildings and other public works projects complete with plans, profiles and cross sections; may reduce survey field notes; computes traverses and plot resulting data to prepare topographic maps, property and description maps; assessment district plans, and similar documents; prepares visual aid exhibits; charts and graphics; researches records, compiles field data, maintains City maps, files, database data, and records of streets, sanitary sewers, storm drains, parks and buildings; investigates requests from citizens; may act as rod-person on a survey party performing topographic, property and construction surveys; may perform traffic engineering duties; prepares sketches and makes calculations related to foregoing assignments; updates computer drafting standards and standard details; answers questions of the public.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that likely provides the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school, including or supplemented by courses in drafting and trigonometry.
Experience: Four (4) years of experience in engineering drafting with some survey experience. Education or experience with “AutoCAD” is highly desirable.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION: 
 
  • Must possess a valid California Driver’s License upon time of appointment and be insurable with the City’s standard insurance rate, unless otherwise approved by appointing authority.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Knowledge of: Engineering drafting and surveying methods, techniques and instruments.
Ability to: Make mathematical calculations quickly and accurately; understand and follow oral and written directions; get along with others; good communication skills.
Special Information:Education and experience with "AutoCAD" are highly desired. Experience with GIS computer mapping and asset management/database systems is highly desired. Experience with CCTV camera inspection of sewers and storm drains is highly desired.
DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS
All City of Monterey employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
