Job Description:

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW & POSITION SUMMARY:
The Residence Hall Director is an eleven (11) month professional live-in position and includes the management and overall operation of a Residence Hall during the academic year and residential life responsibilities during the summer. This is a 48 week position with four (4) weeks off in the summer months as determined by the College with possible employment opportunities in a different department during the off month. Our Residence Hall Director positions include the joint management of neighboring institutions leasing space and supporting MassArt leased space at area institutions.
Massachusetts College of Art and Design works with a Property Management Company regarding the maintenance of the on-campus housing program. The Property Management Company is responsible for security, facilities/maintenance, summer leasing/conferencing and damage billing. It is the responsibility of the Residence Hall Director and the Property Manager to work together to address resident needs, establish clear guidelines and to follow policies that have been established through Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Paraprofessional staff
SALARY: Range of 43,000-45,000 - Commensurate with experience
This position is governed by the APA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Student Development:
  • Build relationships with residents in order to create community and facilitate referrals to appropriate academic and/or administrative departments.
  • Establish and maintain strong and positive connections with residential students.
  • Serve as a partner in the student's holistic development by working with various offices and stakeholders as needed.
  • Support departmental programming model and philosophy by planning, organizing, and directing student activities and programs within the residence halls.
  • Assist in determining the goals of the Department in line with the College's Strategic Plan.
  • Educate and enforce all MassArt policies and procedures including MassArt community standards, residence hall policies, expectations, and regulations to individual students and groups in the residence halls.
  • Serve as a hearing officer for student conduct matters as assigned.
Supervision
  • Supervise, evaluate, schedule, and establish performance goals for paraprofessional RA staff in the building and other positions by the Department of Housing and Residence Life as assigned.
  • Collaborate with other College-wide staff to provide paraprofessional staff in-service training.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement educational programs on topics related to issues of social justice.
  • Conduct weekly supervisory meetings, monthly staff development sessions, and Social Justice Seminars with staff on a group and individual basis.
  • Assist paraprofessional staff in dealing with student concerns.
  • Responsible for the recruitment and hiring of paraprofessional staff.
Administrative/Operations
  • Ensure coverage and maintain regular office hours of building RD office.
  • Supervise the administrative duties associated with the operation of the residence halls (i.e. mail, posting, bulletin boards, programming, etc.).
  • Maintain budgets and monitor expenditures related to programming under the direction of the Assistant Director.
  • Utilize housing software as directed to process RCRs, room changes, key tracking, etc.
  • Supervise the issuance, collection, and control of room and building keys.
  • Coordinate the opening and closing of the residence halls.
  • Participate in Residence Life office functions (i.e. room selection, staff selection, etc.) and College functions as deemed necessary by the Director of Housing and Residence Life.
  • Participate in and assist in planning College-wide events (including but not limited to): Opening/closing of Residence Halls, Orientation, Accepted Students Day events, and Commencement.
  • Represent the Office of Housing and Residence Life on committees as required during the academic year.
  • Partner with the property management company, ensure facility maintenance, perform inspections of student rooms to maintain appropriate standards of health and safety.
  • Report all concerns, behavioral or facilities related, through the proper channels.
  • Partner with the security officers within the residence halls regarding building emergencies and other operational needs.
  • Collaborate with other live-in professional to ensure smooth operation of residence hall mail/package delivery and MA staff supervision.
Partner Institutions:
  • Work with partnering institutions that share MassArt housing and MassArt leased space.
  • Set-up regular meetings with partner institutions to discuss building operations and issues related to Residence Life.
  • Collaborate with other professional staff to provide indirect supervision, support and training to the partner institutions' resident assistants staffed in the building.
Complete additional related responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Housing and Residence Life, and/or the SSAO or other senior leadership.
Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree with experience in Student Affairs.
  • Demonstrated experience with issues of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively work with others
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Provide professional staff on-call coverage as required during evening and weekend hours during the year (this includes all institutional breaks and summer coverage).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Masters degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Previous on-call professional duty experience
  • Ability to establish a strong presence in the community in which the RD lives and the greater MassArt community.
  • Previous supervision, advisement, and development experience for student staff and leaders.
  • Strong customer service, critical thinking, consensus building, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to anticipate and successfully manage all aspects of a residential community.
  • Demonstrated experience in working through conflict, change, and uncertainty.
  • Proven collaborative work with external departments, faculty, and campus partners.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of training in Inclusivity and issues of Social Justice
  • Experience as an hearing officer for Student Conduct
  • Knowledge of Academic and College policies
  • Experience with Crisis Management/Case Management
  • Experience with Conduct Management
  • Experience with housing and conduct software
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  • This is a full-time live-on position which requires frequent weekend and after-hours work.
  • ADA accessible two-bedroom fully furnished apartment with a full kitchen.
  • A full College meal plan during the Academic Year.
  • Partners/families and pets allowed contingent upon successful background check and with approval of the Director of Housing and Residence Life and AVP/Dean of Students.
The position is a designated essential personnel staff position which means (absent of extreme circumstances) all scheduled work is to take place on-campus.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects up to 15 lbs.
