SUNY College of Optometry is Hiring a Director of Career Development Near New York, NY

As the lead strategist for ensuring post-graduation career readiness, the Director of Career Development is crucial to the success of students, residents, and alumni at the College. This role leads the Career Development Center (CDC) and includes, delivering high-quality career development programs and services, mentoring programs, cultivating relationships, and focusing on improving student career satisfaction 5 years post-graduation. The Director works with various stakeholders, including academic and student affairs, alumni relations, industry partners, and employers, to enhance career and professional development opportunities. 
Additionally, the Director promotes a commitment to professional ethics, social responsibility, and professional accountability among students, residents, and alumni, encouraging a culture of giving within the College and community.
The role also includes responsibility for implementing the Collegiate Science Technology Entry Program (CSTEP), aimed at introducing economically disadvantaged and underrepresented in optometry undergraduate students to optometry and supporting CSTEP students at the College. 
The Director reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Engagement and shapes professional pathways and fosters a culture committed to the values of the College, professional ethics, and responsibility. 
Career Development Responsibilities: 
  • Lead the College’s Career Development Center (CDC), focusing on delivering and evaluating programs, events, and services for student and alumni career success.
  • Responsible for the oversight, implementation, assessment of flagship programs, such as the Annual Career Symposium, Family of Mentors programs, Networking with Docs, Senior Seminars, and other relevant programs. 
  • Collaborate closely with alumni affairs and Institutional Advancement to design and deliver programs, engage volunteers and industry partners, as well as develop opportunities for students, residents, and graduates. 
  • Implement strategies to enhance career satisfaction 5 years post-graduation, concentrating on career development, work-life balance, and adapting to changes in healthcare and technology. 
  • Provide and create opportunities for personal career counseling, resume and cover letter reviews, mock interviews, and employment contract negotiation. 
  • Manage the CDC Career Portal and oversee the CDC budget. 
  • Stay informed about trends, career opportunities, and legislation in the optometry field. 
  • Create and update marketing materials for CDC events, programs and services consulting the marketing and communications team as appropriate. 
  • Prepare and deliver reports to College leadership; supervise student workers. 
  • Serve as an advisor to student clubs and collaborate with various departments for integrated support. 
CSTEP Program Responsibilities: 
  • Implement CSTEP programs to increase undergraduate students’ interest in optometry and implement programs to increase persistence, retention, and success of CSTEP students at the College.
  • Coordinate events and resources for CSTEP students, the SUNY Optometry Irises group. 
  • Direct CSTEP initiatives focused on professional development. 
  • Implement strategies for diverse student recruitment, retention, and success in collaboration with the Director of Admissions and Chief Diversity Officer. Speak at pre-optometry or pre-health clubs about the profession. 
  • Collaborate with local, regional, and national minority-serving organizations and educational institutions. 
  • Manage assigned CSTEP budget and assist with the preparation of grants and reports for funding agencies. 
 
Candidate Qualifications
The successful candidate will bring a contemporary, holistic view of career development to the role. 
  • The Director will have a minimum 2-5 years’ experience in optometry and/or professional higher education 
  • A Bachelors required but an advanced degree is preferred (Masters in Higher Education, O.D., Ph.D., etc.) 
  • Demonstrated interest in current career development models, career counseling, career assessments, employment trends, legal issues in employment, and employer cultivation. 
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and act collaboratively 
  • Experience with coaching students and/or professionals from diverse backgrounds toward career goal attainment 
  • Successful record of student-programs management and achievement of learning outcomes 
  • Strategic planner with a record of organizational goal attainment 
  • Proven ability to plan and execute large-scale events 
  • Exceptional writing skills and oral presentation skills; budget development and management 
  • Detail oriented with ability to manage multiple priorities, programs, and events 
  • A student-centered approach to the delivery of programs, events and services 
  • Must be able to work independently and be results-oriented 
  • Collaborate and work effectively with diverse members across multiple constituencies including faculty, staff, students, residents, alumni, and organized optometry members 
  • Flexible working schedule that includes some nights and weekends, and travel 
Minimum of $100,000. SUNY Optometry provides the above salary as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience and education. In addition to the salary offered, we offer a generous benefit package. 15 days of annual leave to start and 13 paid holidays per year.
