Position Summary

The Instructor will provide adult basic education instruction, with a focus on preparing participants to successfully pass the Construction and Skilled Trades Practice Test (CAST) exam. This role involves developing and implementing tailored curricula, providing engaging instruction, and offering support to adult learners striving to enter the utility industry. The Instructor will lead the expansion of the training program’s academic support and instruction, expanding access to career advancement pathways.

Primary Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development

  1. Develop comprehensive curriculum and lesson plans aligned with the content and format of the CAST exam.

  2. Design assessments that align with the CAST exam and track the progress of participants and their understanding of the material.

  3. Coordinate with program instructors to support curriculum continuity and the integration of adult basic education content across relevant workshops.

Instructional Delivery

  1. Develop and deliver a comprehensive curriculum for an intensive 30-hour-per-week, 3-6-week CAST prep class, ensuring thorough coverage of exam content and effective learning progression.

  2. Deliver CAST prep classes during evenings and/or weekends to accommodate working graduates, providing flexible learning options and supportive resources tailored to adult learners' schedules and needs.

  3. Facilitate a one-day adult basic education workshop as part of the overall workforce development program, to support participants' personal and professional growth.

  4. Create and lead interactive workshops focused on preparing participants for behavioral interviews.

  5. Utilize diverse teaching methods such as lectures, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and group discussions.

  6. Adapt teaching strategies to accommodate various learning styles and levels of proficiency.

  7. Deliver dynamic and interactive instructional sessions aimed at fostering engagement and understanding.

Academic Support and Assessment

  1. Provide individualized support and academic assistance to address each participant’s specific learning needs and challenges.

  2. Facilitate practice exams to simulate the testing environment.

  3. Offer constructive feedback and personalized guidance to help participants improve their performance.

  4. Conduct baseline assessments, monitor participant progress, identify areas for growth, and implement targeted interventions.

  5. Maintain a supportive and inclusive learning environment conducive to participant success.

  6. Coordinate with relevant Civic Works staff to share the academic progress of each participant and develop collaborative participant support strategies.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinate with relevant staff members to support job placement and career advancement with partner employers.

  2. Complete other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in adult education

  • Experience in instructional and curriculum design required

  • Experience with math instruction and/or standardized testing preparation preferred

Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective classroom management and ability to engage with program participants.

  • Exceptional time management skills.

  • Proficiency in Google Drive and Calendar, Microsoft Word and Powerpoint applications.

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, both independently and as part of a team.

  • Excellent verbal communication skills, interpersonal relations skills, and writing skills

  • Ability to recognize problems, develop innovative solutions and implement them

  • Ability to adhere to a strict guideline of keeping and maintaining confidential information

  • Dedicated to fostering an inclusive learning environment.
