Job Summary

A Police Officer I protects life and property in assigned geographic areas of the school district in a marked, caged, radio-equipped school police vehicle and provides protective school police services and back up activities in assigned geographic areas of the district. ABOUT SCHOOL POLICE SERVICES: The San Diego Unified School District Police Department is recognized as a leader in school-based community policing. While our primary role is to maintain order and security on and near school facilities, school police officers provide far more than standard law enforcement efforts. We also take a leading role in creating the positive learning environment in which superb education is not only possible, but also probable. School police personnel are encouraged to spend quality time in developing positive interpersonal relationships with those in our schools and in our community. Personnel engage in daily contact with students, teachers, staff, and members of the community to help promote a positive learning environment with the schools, and to build ever-growing cooperative partnerships among the schools and the surrounding communities. As a result, students benefit most of all by being better able to concentrate their time and attention on what matters most: learning and growing. POSITION AND BENEFITS: The position is represented by the Police Officers' Association (POA) and is covered by the negotiated terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement. The District provides a generous compensation and benefits package, including CalPERS 3%@50 for classic members or 2.7%@57 for new members (CalPERS members after 1/1/13), Six choices of medical plans, including HMO and PPO options through United HealthCare or Kaiser Permanente, The District pays the full cost of medical, dental, and vision care premiums for employees who work half time or more and their eligible dependents. A Retiree Medical Trust is provided.

Requirements / Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of training, experience, and/or education equivalent to completion of applicable criminal justice courses in an accredited college and enrollment in a California P.O.S.T. approved municipal law enforcement training academy. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid California POST Basic Academy Certificate / POST Academy waiver is required prior to offer of employment. Possession of a valid California driver's license. United States citizenship. Prior to appointment, State law requires the successful passing of a thorough background check, including polygraph, chemical substance and medical testing, and psychological testing. Must be qualified to render basic first aid and CPR.

EXAMINATION PROCESS: Based upon a review of applications received, those applicants who best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to continue in the selection process. Appointments for initial screening interviews are scheduled quarterly and/or as needed. The initial screening interview is scored and assigns value to education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities that relate most closely to the duties and responsibilities of the job and the needs of the School Police Services Department. A list of candidate's that pass the initial screening interview will be forwarded to the School Police Services Department for their consideration. Successful candidates will be invited to participate in a ride-along to learn more about the type of work performed by school police. Additionally, eligible candidates will be subject to a thorough background investigation. A candidate's name shall remain on eligible list for no longer than one year from the date of their initial screening interview.
