JOB DESCRIPTION:

To provide a professional support system for the faculty and staff of Birmingham City Schools (BCS). To reduce problems in the work force in order to retain valued employees. To assist employees in resolving personal problems that inhibit the performance of work duties, and to offer assistance in restoring the employee to maximum level of productivity.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Abides by the established rules and guidelines of the BSC.
  • Maintains flexible hours and sees clients in a timely manner.
  • Keeps confidential records on clients’ appropriate recommendations/referrals.
  • Use of constructive assessment, short-term intervention, and motivation with clients to address problems that affect job performance.
  • Provides specific training to individuals and departments on relevant topics.
  • Mediates and assists in resolving conflict with employees.
  • Conducts programs related to wellness education, prevention education and intervention.
  • Counsels children and adults (individual and family).
  • Coordinate all EAP referrals (supervisory and volunteer) with contracted EAP program.
  • Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policies, and state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a Masters in social work or counseling field or higher.
  • Valid license from the State of Alabama in social work or counseling (LPC, LMSW, or LICSW)

LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), LMSW (Licensed Masters Social Worker), or LICSW (Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker)

  • Experience in counseling with individuals and families who may have substance abuse or mental health issues. Minimum 3 years.
  • Experience in developing relevant workshop topics and ability to facilitate those workshops.
  • Ability to work alone with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work with difficult people.
  • Ability to be flexible.
  • Ability to handle crisis situations.
  • Familiar with community resources and ability to make referrals.
  • Employment experience gained in the private employment sector may be considered.
