Story County Iowa is Hiring a Service Coordinator Near Ames, IA

Summary Description

This position is responsible for coordinating the provision of general assistance programs and services to eligible clients. This position performs varied client services, eligibility determination, and program coordination duties.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Meets with applicants, conducts interviews, and assists with the application process; determines program eligibility; reviews client needs and reviews budgets.
  • Refers clients to external resources to meet their needs.
  • Communicates with landlords and utility companies regarding client accounts and balances.
  • Inputs data and documentation into computer database.
  • Maintains logs and prepares narrative histories of interactions with clients.
  • Communicates with partnering agencies to provide client assistance; follows-up with clients and partnering agencies.
  • Meets with clients on an ongoing basis; assesses and prioritizes needs and barriers to self-sufficiency; assists clients in setting goals and recording progress.
  • Assists in developing outreach materials for the purpose of education, prevention, and public awareness.
  • Establishes working relationships with area professionals, service providers, landlords, and the community at large to combat the problem of homelessness in the community; assesses housing barriers by people at-risk of becoming homeless to determine housing and service needs.
  • Receives and responds to various community and stakeholder inquiries; attends meetings; serves on committees or provides training on department related topics.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of General Assistance and centralized intake policies and procedures.
  • Answers telephone and greets visitors; provides information and assistance.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of the general assistance program eligibility requirements.
  • Knowledge of community service organizations, their resources, and their eligibility requirements.
  • Knowledge of veterans’ services and programs.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in the assessment of client needs and in the provision of client services.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

Story County offers a comprehensive benefits package for employees regularly working 30 hours or more per week. Benefits are pro-rated for employees working between 30-39 hours per week. The benefits available include vacation, sick leave, family sick leave, life insurance and AD&D, short-term disability, long-term disability, health and dental insurance, vision insurance, flexible spending accounts, retirement and an employee assistance program. Benefits may vary dependent on employment status and bargaining unit status.
