Job Title: Alarm Technician
Wage/Hour Status: Exempt
Reports to: Director of Maintenance
Pay Grade: Auxiliary PG 5
Dept./School: Maintenance

Annual Work Days: 261
Primary PurposeUnder general supervision, maintain, repair, and install electronic fire and alarm systems, services, and equipment for the district.
QualificationsEducation/Certification:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Preferred: Licenses/certificates to fulfill state and local requirements.
  • Clear and valid Texas driver’s license
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Preferred: Knowledge of Notifier & Potter alarm panels
  • General low voltage knowledge for alarm systems, cameras, and speakers
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and written reference material
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve problems
  • Ability to use hand and power tools
Experience
  • Required: 1 year experience working with electronic security & fire systems
  • Preferred: Two to three (2-3) years of experience in inspections of fire sprinklers and low voltage systems.
Major Responsibilities And Duties
  • Inspect fire protection systems in accordance with NFPA codes.
  • Have a working knowledge of alarm panels, devices, and components.
  • Ability to communicate with internal and external stakeholders as well as offsite monitoring companies.
  • Proper use and operation of tools required to complete Fire alarm inspections
  • Record and report deficiencies in fire and security alarm protection systems
  • Understand and follow BFS’s Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous communication program, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to train others
  • Inspect completed jobs and ensure areas are clean.
  • Respond to emergency and routine service calls as needed.
  • Recommend repair or replacement of electronic security systems and equipment based on district needs. Estimate costs and assist with the preparation of formal bids.
Safety
  • Ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Other
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records of services provided.
  • Train district employees on areas of responsibility for backup purposes.
  • Work with building principals and supervisors to complete projects.
  • May be required to be on call after hours and on weekends.
  • Other Job duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Motion: Continual walking, climbing stairs/ladders, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, reaching, reaching overhead, keyboarding and use of mouse, driving
Lifting: Frequent moderate lifting (15–44 pounds)
Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme temperatures; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions, in small spaces, around electrical power lines, outside and inside.
Mental Demands: Frequent district wide travel.
