The Salvation Army Eastern Territory is Hiring a Leadership Development Director Near Union, NJ

Overview

Provide overall leadership and direction to the recruiting, training, and encouragement of local officers and other lay leaders in the Division.

The Leadership Development Director will be expected to spend time at the Corps during the week, and weekends, including Sundays. The Leadership Development Director will need to become intimately aware of every corps in the command with respect to both current and potential lay leadership.

Responsibilities

Corps Leadership Development

  • Educate and assist corps in the development of important corps leadership bodies, including but not limited to, Senior and Junior Pastoral Care Councils and Corps Councils.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Local Officer Training

  • Function as a conduit of information between DHQ and Local Units regarding Local Officership.
  • Provide local officer trainings through a variety of mediums including retreats, individual consultation, corps workshops, and webinars.
    • Develop an annual schedule of divisional training events including Soldiers’ Rallies, Local Officer Retreats, Leadership Training Days, etc.
    • Develop promotional materials and presentations using; flyers, posters and bulletins, PowerPoint presentations, Corps visits, and announcements at Divisional events.
    • Provide an annual training on Spiritual Health including:
      • Personal Spiritual Health
      • Corps Spiritual Health
      • Spiritual Health of others through the importance of outreach ministry
    • Provide a bi-annual training on financial stewardship and corps finance responsibility of local officers. Trainings should include the following:
      • Encourage involvement in developing local fundraisers and community awareness with Corps Officers
      • How to read a budget presented in corps council
      • Personal tithing responsibilities
      • Importance of active volunteer service
    • Recruit and coordinate attendance at territorial programs including, but not limited to The Arsenal and LEAD.

Local Officer Recruitment

  • Educate Corps Officers, Pastoral Care Councils, Corps Councils, and Soldiers about the importance, benefits, and processes of making local Officers.
  • Help Corps Officers to identify potential leaders and connect them with a ministry role that exercises their spiritual gifts and aligns with their talent and abilities.
    • Emphasize the recruitment and development of key local officers such as: The Recruiting Sergeant, The Corps Sergeant Major, and the Corps Secretary.
  • Utilize various assessments to help place lay leaders appropriately.
  • Become familiar with soldiery in the division who are or could become local leaders.

Local Officer Processing

  • In accordance with the Orders and Regulations, process all applications for local Officership.
    • Coordinate with the Divisional KeepSAafe Coordinator to ensure that all applicants are KeepSAfe and State law compliant.
    • Notify all relevant departments of applicants (i.e., a YPSM to the youth department).
    • Submit completed application packet to the Divisional Commander through the Divisional Program Secretary.
    • Ensure completed applications are returned to corps with appropriate certificates in a timely matter.
    • Recommend uniform trim, pins, badges, etc. to the Corps Officer’s for all new local leadership roles and positions being requested.
    • In addition to keeping a list of all current LOs in the division, work with the Divisional Statistician to ensure that all LOs are recorded in the Corps Management Database and NSS (Stats).
  • Provide encouragement to local officers through the renewals and long-service awards.
    • Encourage Corps Officers and Local Officers to participate in the annual Territorial Day of Local Officer Renewal.
    • Ensure that renewal resources are effectively dispersed to the frontline, and act as a source of information to provide support through the renewal process.
    • Compile and process annual local officer long service awards.
  • Assist corps officers and divisional staff with updating soldiers’ information in the CMD; including the removal or transfers of local officers’ and their commissions from the corps rolls and corps management database.

Divisional Soldier’s Express Council

  • Chair the Divisional Soldier’s Express Council.
  • Prepare the agenda for all meetings in consultation with the Divisional Program Secretary.
  • Propose guidelines to the Divisional Program Secretary for the functioning and work of the Divisional Soldier’s Express Council.
  • Ensure Minutes for all Soldier’s Council Meetings are recorded in a timely matter and follow through on all Council business as directed by the Divisional Program Secretary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Ministry, or Related Field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in related field.
  • Must be a uniform wearing Salvationist.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Willing to work weekend and evening hours when necessary.
  • Must hold an active leadership role in a Corps.
  • Must understand and support the mission of The Salvation Army.
