Murdock Martell is Hiring a Vice President of Finance Near Santa Clara, CA

Our Client is seeking a Vice President of Finance from the construction industry who has a proven track record of success with managing and directing all company finances. This newly created role is crucial to strategic planning, budgeting, financial analysis, risk management and assurance of financial compliance. It requires a deep understanding of finance principles as well as a strong grasp of the construction industry's unique financial challenges and opportunities.
This casual multi-generational family business is looking for a candidate to join their team who is strategic, collaborative, loyal and who possesses the grit to the get the job done. The ideal candidate is someone who is driven, self-motivated and humble. The Vice President of Finance will be required to be on-site 100% of the time in Santa Clara, California. There will be once a month travel out of state. This role reports to the Chief Financial Officer.
Responsibilities:
  • Build and lead a high-performing finance team, providing guidance, coaching, and professional development opportunities.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to other executives and departments, providing financial expertise and support to achieve organizational goals.
  • Develop, teach, and train and foster a culture of continual accountability and improvement.
  • Develop and execute financial strategies aligned with the Company's overall objectives.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and long-term financial planning.
  • Assess financial performance regularly and provide insights to senior management for informed decision-making.
  • Oversee the preparation and analysis of financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  • Provide accurate and insightful financial reports to senior management, board of directors, and other stakeholders.
  • Identify key financial metrics and trends, and develop recommendations for improvement.
  • Establish and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor and manage financial risks, including interest rate risk and credit risk as well as insurance risk profile.
  • Stay up to date of changes in financial regulations and ensure the Company's compliance with all relevant laws and standards.
  • Evaluate investment opportunities, mergers, and acquisitions.
  • Facilitate the purchase of all capital acquisitions.
  • Oversee cash flow planning and management to ensure liquidity and optimize working capital.
  • Manage banking relationships and debt facilities.
  • Implement cash management strategies to minimize costs and maximize returns.
  • Direct the accounting function, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and general ledger.
  • Ensure accurate recording of financial transactions in accordance with GAPP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
  • Perform all purchase accounting and intercompany transactions related to acquisitions.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field; MBA preferred.
  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CCIFP (Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional) designation highly desirable.
  • 5 years of experience in financial leadership roles, ideally within the construction industry.
  • Possess a strong understanding of construction accounting principles and project finance.
  • 10 years of in-depth knowledge of financial planning and analysis, financial reporting, and risk management.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights and recommendations.
  • Strong leadership skills with a track record of building and developing high-performing teams.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with senior management, board members, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and drive change effectively.
The salary is based on paying competitively for the size and industry. Individual pay decisions are based on a number of factors, including qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, and balancing internal equity relative to peers at the company. The starting salary is for the expectations as laid out in the job description; however, we are often open to a wide variety of profiles and recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced or more senior than this job description as posted. If that ends up being the case, the salary range will be communicated to you as a candidate.
Starting range: $250k-$300k base.
