This is a fully remote team that mainly works on EST hours. Remote candidates based in the U.S. are welcome to apply as long as they are able to maintain EST business hours, and while we do work remotely, the ideal candidate would be located on the East Coast.

Job Description

COURIER is presently looking to fill the position of a Senior Vice President (SVP) of Operations to support the growth of the organization, which has doubled in staff last year and which will continue to expand operations across the country with goals to increase our headcount by approximately 40% by the end of this year!

The Senior Vice President of Operations is a pivotal role within our senior leadership team, who will be responsible for the oversight of a diverse set of operational domains including people, legal affairs, technology, data infrastructure, and state expansion initiatives. This position requires an exceptional leader capable of fostering an existing COURIER culture of continuous improvement, diversity, and operational excellence to support this fast-growing organization. This role will be responsible for building, improving, and maintaining new and existing processes for the growing organization.

This role will oversee the day-to-day operations of the entire organization, and drive the implementation of the company’s technology backbone. This role will also spearhead the launch and management of any future newsroom expansions and cross-department initiatives, develop robust communications, and provide oversight to major projects to enhance productivity, streamline operations. and lead major company strategic initiatives.

This role is a SVP-level leadership position that will report to the Chief Executive Officer. This position will provide oversight to executive-level and senior COURIER team members, including the organization’s Vice President of People, a Head of Technology, and an Operations Director. This position is part of COURIER’s executive leadership team and will be expected to be responsible for organization-wide decision making and Board of Director communications and accountability. All members of the executive leadership team (ELT) have a direct seat at the table in strategizing around and aligning on how COURIER will achieve and execute on our company goals, while creating a healthy, compassionate and dynamic workplace for all employees.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

People: Provide strategic advisement to the People team, led directly by the Vice President of People, to include end-to-end people functions. The People team plays a pivotal role as a cornerstone of our organization, and leads efforts in managing our most valuable asset: our people.

Operations: Oversee and lead Operations, which includes company-wide legal affairs, contracts, insurance, and compliance with state and federal filings (excluding income tax filings). This role will also oversee vendor relationships and audit process functions across the company, including office equipment procurement and device management.

Focus on operationalizing employee productivity, creating systems and processes to streamline operations, and foster cross-departmental collaboration and success. The SVP will be charged with identifying operational efficiencies and formalizing company processes to enhance transparency and accountability.

The SVP of Ops will provide the CEO with useful data and insight on an ongoing basis to help guide decision making, and allow the company to scale effectively and efficiently.

Technology: Oversee Technology and Data Department that will lead the management of IT infrastructure, cybersecurity measures, website development, and maintenance.

Data Analytics: Oversee a growing data analytics team and operations to support every aspect of the organization in data-driven decision making. The data analytics team builds and maintains systems for reporting on audience, content engagement, civic impact, and revenue.

State Expansion: Direct the launch and management of new newsrooms, ensuring alignment with overall company goals related to mission alignment, civic impact, audience growth and revenue.

Cross-Functional Projects: Oversee large, organization-wide projects or initiatives, fostering new working relationships and synergies across the organization.

Compensation and Total Rewards: Review and assess company salary bands, compensation structures, and roles, aligning them with market standards and organizational objectives.

Communication: Building and fostering productive relationships with executive leadership, state newsroom staff, and all business stakeholders; continuing to be an exceptional partner, coach and facilitator who adds value to our business and team dynamics at every level.

The ideal candidate will have/be:

● A minimum of 10 to 15 years of experience in operations or a closely related field, with a significant portion of this time spent in leadership roles. Experience should demonstrate a track record of operational excellence, efficiency improvements, and successful management of large teams and projects

.

● Proven experience in leading and developing high-performing teams, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and drive results. Experience in senior management roles, such as Vice President or Director of Operations, is typically required.

● Demonstrated ability to lead large, complex projects involving multiple departments and stakeholders, ensuring alignment with the company's strategic goals.

● A proactive and solutions-drive approach to seeing around corners, preventing and solving problems before they escalate or create harm to the organization or its staff members

● Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to clearly articulate vision, strategy, and expectations across all levels of the organization.

● Ability to adapt to changing business needs, technologies, and environments, driving innovation and continuous improvement.

● Superior organization skills, with meticulous attention to detail

● Familiarity with relevant industry regulations and compliance standards, ensuring the company adheres to all legal and ethical guidelines.

● Strong business ethics, including the ability to work in a highly confidential remote work environment.

● Start-up experience preferred and interest and/or relevant experience in the news.
