St. Joseph's Addiction Treatment and Recovery Centers

Location: Rose Hill Adolescent Treatment Program - Massena, NY

Position: Part-time RN

Schedule: Friday and Saturday, 7:00am to 3:00pm 

Pay Range: $32.00/hour to $42.00/hour

Position Summary: The incumbent of this position will provide general health care services to patients. They are responsible for diagnosing and ensuring that patients are treated for actual or potential problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling and the delivery of first aid treatment. The nurse generally maintains an infirmary type setting and is responsible for environmental safeguard and management, which includes care and upkeep of the infirmary, its equipment, personal appliances and all first aide medications, prescription drugs and the physical hygiene and health care plans. Nurses ensure that all medical regimens prescribed by the Medical Supervisor or referring physician are followed. They will follow the patient for the duration of their treatment in order to provide medical input to the clinical team.

Education and Training: License to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State, and two years of experience in overall hospital experience (preferably psychiatric care) or certificate of eligibility, with the required experience. Candidate must be licensed within two years of employment.

Physical Demands: No extraordinary physical demands required.

Experience and Work Knowledge:

Knowledge of:

  • professional nursing principles, techniques, and medical terminology
  • appropriate emergency treatment
  • medications and drugs, common dosages, their physical and psychological effects, and possible adverse reactions
  • Chemical Dependency treatment (teaching and counseling principles) including biological effects of drugs on the body's system; abnormal signs and symptoms relating to physical and emotional health.

Ability to:

  • develop and implement a nursing care plan to meet the needs of individual patients.
  • recognize changes in signs and symptoms that warrant the immediate attention of a physician.
  • prepare accurate and timely written records and reports.
  • work with an adolescent population; giving support, comfort, and reassurance to patients.
  • listen, understand, and appreciate the worth/value of patients by treating each with respect and dignity.
  • maintain a professional image (role model) among patients, colleagues, and outside agencies.
  • work with staff to implement programs goals.

Essential Duties: The following is a general list of some of the tasks associated with this position. It is not meant to be all inclusive, but rather a respectful guide:

  • Assesses the medical needs of a patient upon intake/screening and admission.
  • Upon admission, the nurse will develop a medical plan of action which will be reflected in their treatment plan.
  • Daily evaluation of patient’s overall health and report any needed information to the Medical and Clinical Supervisors while maintaining medical/nursing records.
  • Reports all information weekly to clinical team for treatment planning and updating
  • Ensures all prescribed and over the counter medications are inventoried, administered, and recorded in compliance with program policy and procedures.
  • Schedules all patients for medical care (e.g., dentist, physicals, psychological testing, planned hospital visits)
  • Provides emergency first aid and determines if the Medical Supervisor and/or further treatment is needed.
  • Conducts ongoing health education classes:
    • STD's including HIV and AIDS classes.
    • Nutrition
    • Birth Control & Sex Education
    • Personal Hygiene
  • Conducts in-service trainings for staff as needed.
  • Maintains an up to date "infirmary" suitable to the needs of the program.
  • Maintains liaison among program and community agencies (hospital, physicians, Dept. of Social Services, Medicaid Dept., Insurance Companies and HMO's)
  • May function as chairperson of the following committees: Safety, Fire Inspection, Infectious Control
  • Registered Nurse will also sit on the Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Committees
  • The Registered Nurse is not limited to the aforementioned duties; they may vary from time to time based upon the discretion of the Clinical Supervisor
