POSITION TITLE: Operator/Laborer EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time
DEPARTMENT: Street Department F.L.S.A. STATUS: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Street Superintendent
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: In addition to the following, performs other related duties as required.
Under general supervision, operates trucks and light equipment for construction, maintenance, and repair of roads and city property.
QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and work experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below. An example of an acceptable qualification for this position is:
Any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform the work of this position; must possess valid Commercial Driver’s License.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION: For purposes of 42USC 12101.
1. Operates various types of light equipment for the construction, maintenance, and repair of roads and city owned property; loads, dumps, and spreads crushed stone; sands and salts roads; removes snow.
2. Performs a variety of semi-skilled labor tasks; mows grass; trims trees; removes debris, picks up leaves and grass clippings, and deposits at compost site; and assists in maintaining Street Department yard and building areas in clean and safe working condition.
3. Checks and maintains equipment to ensure proper levels of fuel, lubricants, tire pressure and for any unusual wear of equipment.
4. On call twenty-four (24) hours, seven (7) days per week.
5. Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES necessary to perform duties (* indicates developed after employment).
Knowledge of: department policies and procedures*; safety practices and procedures; road maintenance and repair; light and medium duty equipment maintenance and repair; mechanical maintenance; snow and ice removal; grounds maintenance and repair.
Skill in: motor vehicle operation; light and medium construction equipment operation; snowplow operation; use of hand and power tools.
Ability to: carry out detailed but basic written or oral instructions; deal with problems involving several variables within familiar context; add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers; understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; cooperate with co-workers on group projects; demonstrate physical agility; perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time in often adverse conditions; travel to and gain access to work site; lift up to 50 lbs.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED
Trucks, loader, backhoe, roller, street sweeper, power tools, hand tools, leaf collector.
UNUSUAL, HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:
The employee must negotiate, use, or work with or in the vicinity of:
1. Fixed industrial stairs.
2. Portable metal ladders.
3. Emergency Plans and Fire Plans.
4. Vehicle-mounted elevating and rotating work platforms.
5. Noisy operations or activities.
6. Compressed gases.

8. Flammable and combustible liquids.
9. Spray finishing using flammable and combustible materials.

14. Eye and face protection due to potential exposure to flying objects, impact, and other hazards.
15. Occupational head protection due to potential impact to the head from objects, electricity, and other hazards (required only when hazards are present or likely to be present).

GENERAL DUTY: SAFE AND HEALTHFUL WORKPLACE
The employee:

5. Has exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid or windy weather conditions.
6. Has exposure to hazardous driving conditions.
7. Has exposure to second-hand smoke.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Valid Indiana Commercial Driver’s License within six (6) months of employment.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT
Resident of Grant County, Indiana, or ability to obtain residency within six (6) months.
