EDUCATION OUTREACH SPECIALIST (FULL TIME)

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

The Outreach Specialist develops and presents environmental education programs for K-12 students and teachers to assist with the locality’s stormwater, environmental and conservation education needs and MWEE requirements. This position also assists with other duties and District activities as assigned by the District Operations Manager. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Loudoun SWCD Board of Directors with administrative direction provided by the District Operations Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Develops and provides classroom presentations to local elementary, middle and high schools, includes giving presentations in-person and online.

▪

Conducts outreach education programs to support local stormwater education needs.

▪

Prepares and provides education and outreach related newsletters and reports.

▪

Maintains social media and website for the District.

▪

Serves as a judge at the Regional Science Fair.

▪

Coordinates and administers the District's mini-grant program for the schools.

▪

Establishes and sustains viable District participation in the Dominion Envirothon.

▪

Promotes the Youth Conservation Camp.

▪

Works with Loudoun County Public Schools on STEM presentations and to promote Soil and Water Stewardship Week, and the Loudoun SEAS event.

▪

Assists with District outreach activities at fairs, festivals, and meetings as needed.

▪

Attends monthly District Board meetings.

▪

Occasionally works extended, evening, and/or weekend hours, with periodic travel out of town for training and meetings required (sometimes overnight).

▪

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

▪

Excellent interpersonal skills; requires developing and maintaining sound working relationships and communicating effectively, both orally and through writing, with diverse target audiences using various in-person and online mediums, presentations, displays, etc.

Knowledge of conservation issues related to water quality and the Chesapeake Bay.

▪

Capable of developing and presenting age-appropriate education programs.

▪

Proficient in Microsoft Office computer programs.

▪

Maintain effective working relationships in a team environment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

▪

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by college level courses in education or an environmental field.

▪

Completion of Project WILD, WET, and LEARNING TREE a plus.

▪

Marketing experience a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

▪

Work is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

▪

Tasks involve frequent lifting and carrying moderate weight (30 lbs.).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

▪

Possession of a valid Virginia driver’s license and a safe driving record.

▪

Complete a federal background check; drug testing may be required.
