Summary:

The Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist performs routine venipunctures and/or capillary blood collection on patients. Additionally, the lead lab assistant obtains urine specimens and cultures, processes specimens in preparation for testing, performs clerical tasks, monitors outpatients, answers phones, faxes results, and performs computer order entry as needed.
Experience/Education Requirements:
  • Board eligible
  • Phlebotomy skills and background required.
  • Medical background preferred.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures preferred.
  • Experience with medical terminology preferred.

    License or Certification Requirements:

  • Phlebotomy certification preferred or 2 years' phlebotomy experience preferred

    Responsibilities:

    • All other functions that facilitate in the care of our patients that may be added functions or changes in responsibility.
    • Collates, initials and distributes labels from the computer printer as necessary.
    • Completes nursing home draws and missed draws on other units.
    • Computer entry-registration and order tests for reference clients.
    • Confirm special requirements for specimen acceptability before and/or after delivery of specimen to department.
    • Deliver specimens to appropriate departments with proper orders within defined time limits for test requests.
    • Faxes and calls results as requested and according to policy.
    • Fills all tubes to acceptable levels.
    • Locates previously drawn specimens when acceptable and as time permits for additional test requests by nursing units or physicians.
    • Notifies supervisor of any unusual problems with specimens, patients, physician orders, etc., or when unable to collect an acceptable blood specimen after two attempts.
    • Obtain specimens according to proper procedures as required by lab departments.
    • Process all outpatient requests when Outpatient Center is closed.
    • Process all requests and result for inpatient and send out tests.
    • Process all specimens in central accessioning section for delivery to and testing in other sections of department.
    • Respond to ER traumas and Code 33s.Responsible for answering and distributing phone calls appropriately.
    • Responsible for monitoring and processing computer print outs and all other clerical duties.
    • Responsible for handling all inpatient and outpatient paperwork.
    • Store and transport all specimens according to laboratory policy and procedure.
    • Tubes are drawn in correct order to avoid contamination or carryover in specimens.
    • Verifies identification and labeling of all specimens received before distribution to lab departments.
    • Prepares send out specimens to: Mayo, Quest, Spec, Lab, etc.
    • Prepares, distributes and files appropriate laboratory reports.

      Chemicals: HCL, Sodium carbonate, Acetic acid, perhaps others as preservatives for some specimen collection, white out.
      Video Display Terminals: Average
      Blood and Body Fluids: Blood and body fluids handled continuously on a daily basis so exposure is very high.
      TB or Airborne Pathogens: Very high potential due to direct patient contact and handling of infectious specimens.

      Sensory requirements (speech, vision, smell, hearing, touch):
      Speech: Needed for communication with all customers whether direct or via phone.
      Vision: Needed for proper order entry into computer system.
      Smell: Electrical/fire safety.
      Hearing: Needed to listen to customers and patients.
      Touch: Required for performing phlebotomy, i.e., feeling for vein location and obtaining specimens as well as specimen processing.
