Appomattox Regional Library System is Hiring a Technical Services Manager Near Hopewell, VA

I. POSITION SUMMARY

The Technical Services Manager is responsible for overseeing the efficient management of the Technical Services department. This role involves supervising the daily flow of library materials, coordinating acquisitions, cataloging, classification, and the library automation system. Additionally, the Manager sets and reviews departmental goals and oversees system-wide projects.

II. MAJOR POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Train new library staff in the performance of circulation duties related to Library Automation Systems.

Examples:

a. Supervise and evaluate the Technical Services department.

b. Seek training and education opportunities for staff development.

c. Maintain procedure manuals for Technical services and LS2Staff circulation systems.

d. Annually collaborate with department staff for departmental and staff goals and projects.

e. Review and approve departmental staff timesheets.

f. Oversee departmental supply budget to insure necessary equipment and supplies are on hand.

g. Develop/design training for system staff on aspects of the library automation system.

h. Hold headquarter monthly staff meetings and communicate with the branch service manager to coordinate dissemination of monthly topics.

2. Manage the Technical services Department.

Examples:

a. Manage the acquisitions of books, audio visual materials and other collection materials for the library system.

b. Establish and supervise material budget and ordering schedule for print, standing order, and audio-visual materials.

c. Supervise the placement and tracking of orders, the approval of invoices for payment, make claims for damaged and/or non-receipt items.

d. Maintain relationships with material vendors to assure the most efficient flow of orders and materials.

e. Review and collaborate with collection selectors to maintain a balanced collection.

f. Track expenditures of funds to keep an even flow of materials arriving throughout the fiscal year.

g. Report monthly to librarians and administration on budget status.

h. Perform copy and original cataloging, using Library of Congress Authority standards and RDA standards.

3. Manage the Library Solution automation System.

Examples:

a. Consult with the Electronic Services Librarian and the IT support company on scheduled system updates.

b. Schedule routine collection inventories in collaboration with Branch Services Manager.

c. Supervise/perform annual expired patron card purge.

d. Supervise/perform review of local authority records to update to Library of Congress authority standards.

e. Create and modify user accounts, holding codes, and circulation rules in the LS automation system.

f. Maintain the online calendar of library closing.

4. Community engagement.

Examples:

a. Represent the library and its services at outreach activities throughout the service community (minimum one per quarter).

b. Represent the library as a member of community organizations throughout our service area.

c. Act as or assist librarian in charge at community activities taking place in library facilities outside our normal operating hours (i.e. light up the night).

5. Library development

Examples:

a. Participate in library planning through committee and team structure.

b. Evaluate products and systems for the recommendation to library administration.

c. Work with staff to evaluate the need for new collection codes or changes to existing collection criteria.

III. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of cataloging and classification of library materials, including Library of Congress authorities, LC subject classification, the Dewey Decimal System and Resource Description and Access (RDA) cataloging standards. Familiarity with library automation systems, with preference for TLC’s Library Solution system. In depth experience working with Google Suite office products. Experience working with library material vendors through an EDI system.

Must be able to read, write, give, follow and comprehend verbal and written instructions. Must have effective oral and written communication skills to communicate productively with staff and the public.

Must be available to work one closing shift per week in addition to one Saturday per month.

IV. ACCEPTABLE EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

Masters of Library or Information Science or equivalent degree required. Three to five years of experience in library material processing. Standing, lifting, and pushing boxes and carts up to 50 lbs.

V. SALARY

The salary range is $58,092 - $59,328 with a benefit package including holiday, personal and sick leave, health insurance, and retirement.
