The registered dietitian must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to assess, care plan and provide
services to the elderly population in conjunction with the interdisciplinary team. They assess the health of
individual patients with medical conditions such as diabetes, renal failure, weight loss and wounds and
construct dietary plans that provide adequate nutrition and minimize the condition's effects.
Required skills:
Proficiently assesses residents with a variety of medical conditions.
Completes assessments in a timely manner, in accordance with facility standards.
Thorough knowledge of MDS 3.0 Section K. Submits accurate and timely information.
Proficient in the Nutrition Care Process and writing PES statements.
Calculates enteral and parenteral (if applicable) nutrition recommendations, according to facility policy.
Proficiently completes a nutrition-focused physical exam.
Familiar with malnutrition diagnostic criteria and documents suspected malnutrition clearly in nutrition
assessment note.
Participates in care plan meetings and shares nutrition recommendations with members of the
interdisciplinary team.
Coordinate care with the interdisciplinary team to ensure that all residents have the best possible
nutrition intervention.
Follows facility policy and standards regarding order-writing of diets, supplements, and nutrition
support.
Has thorough knowledge about therapeutic diets, including when each are appropriate to be ordered
and foods permitted.
Assesses high risk residents on a monthly basis providing appropriate supportive nutrition
therapy/education.
Audits the kitchen to ensure that the trayline is meeting sanitary standards.
Hosts in-service training for staff as needed.
Additional responsibilities may include acting as a preceptor to dietetic interns
Sufficient understanding of Windows-based computer applications to learn and the ability to use
electronic medical records.
Demonstrates good judgment, problem solving and decision making skills.
Knowledge/Education and Skills Requirements:
Bachelors degree from an approved program in Dietetics or Nutrition
Master’s degree in nutrition related field preferred
State licensure if applicable
Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RDN) – Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and maintains
status as RDN via CDR
