Nature of Work:

Under general supervision, the Accounting Technician II performs a complete array of paraprofessional accounting support duties. Responsible for performing moderately complex posting, encumbering of funds, and examining records to assure adherence to accounting laws and regulations.

Examples of Work:

  • Classify/code a variety of transactions and utilize wvOASIS ERP system for processing.
  • Review accounts, ledgers, claims, invoices, purchase orders, receipts, or similar materials for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Prepare bank deposits and/or checks.
  • Make correcting and/or adjusting entries.
  • Examine accounting records, i.e. travel expense reimbursement requests to assure adherence to accounting laws and regulations; verify calculations and ensure accuracy and validity of transactions.
  • Prepare and illustrate statements and reports which reflect the relationships among accounts, and which require occasional searching and analysis.
  • Maintain accounting records; gathers data and prepares financial statements and reports from records maintained.
  • May assist supervisor in preparing budget by compiling data, preparing summaries and requests, and developing cost projections.
  • May train and review the work of others.
  • Make entries to account for purchased assets, including modifications and dispositions.
  • Coordinates under supervision agency physical inventory.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Office environment, sitting, stooping, bending, walking, stretching/reaching, keyboarding, manual dexterity, visual acuity, ability to lift over 20 pounds. Some travel required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of accounting laws and regulations of the Department.
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting processes.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematical computations.
  • Knowledge of an automated computer accounting system.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment such as a copier, fax machine, and personal computer.
  • Ability to detect and correct errors in arithmetic.
  • Ability to gather and compile data for use in financial reports.
  • Ability to follow directions, both verbally and in writing, as well as following established procedures and training materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to train and review the work of others.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:


Three years of relevant, progressively complex experience related to bookkeeping, accounting, or a related area is required. Experience with wvOASIS, government booking and accounting is desirable.

  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment drug testing.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment law enforcement background investigation, including DMV records.
  • Must maintain a positive image of the Commissioner, West Virginia Department of Agriculture.
