Your Role:

As a Growth PM at Segment, you will work alongside our team product managers, engineers, analysts, product marketers, sales and customer success. You will identify and execute on the biggest opportunities to deliver an amazing experience from signup to launch. To do so, we instrument the user journey, find places where there could be friction, and build innovative products & features to speed users toward their goals

Your Impact:

Growth product managers are peers to traditional (or core) product managers. But rather than owning a specific product, the growth PM is focused on improving a specific business metric or commercial goal. The growth PM oversees the entire funnel from user acquisition to customer retention to expansion. They run short-term experiments to decrease inefficiencies throughout the funnel, thus improving the metrics.

That metric or goal can correlate to virtually any point in the user journey, as a growth PM's purview covers the entire funnel—from new user acquisition all the way through customer retention and expansion. To improve the metrics they own, growth PMs rely on a series of short-term experiments to incrementally improve and increase efficiencies throughout the funnel.

They oversee the entire engine from lead generation through to monetization and retention. Depending on the current focus of the business (ie. what is the highest priority this quarter), or based on a business case made by the growth PM, they'll hone in on one specific problem, form hypotheses, run experiments, and move the needle until they've optimized the number.

Growth PM and their team will meet regularly to identify and decide on the highest impact initiatives—then proceed with designing experiments, shipping improvements, and measuring results.

Growth PM will be based out of Austin.

PM will:

  • Work extremely closely with the SWO sale specialist team - Tim and Matthieu's team on the customer journeys for Pingdom/Papertrail redirects, DBO/Cloud obs) – Example metrics: increase the user activation rate by more than 20%, Increase conversion by 25%, Increase adding more entities within 60 days by 10%. In fact, for the first few months the Growth PM may sit along with the sales teams to get a pulse for how the team works through this initial users with their journeys and converts them.
  • Responsible for Heroku and other eCommerce efforts to analyze effectiveness and how we can improve / tune.
  • Work with PMM (Pete D) and Web Dev team to assess tuning the different signup pages.
  • Work with PM in each area especially DEM, Logs, Container, DBO to work out how to improve landing experience, pendo messaging and resources to help trial users onboard faster.
  • Work with SWAX teams (Robin/ Pete) and local Application teams to make rapid to do quick build-measure-learn loops.
  • Work with Pendo team (James) and become the pendo expert to incorporate quick changes. In general, initial adoption is a key metric for the growth PM who is going to watch it for all apps and work with Application PMs to improve.
  • Work with tech academy/pubs team (Melanie) to refine in app messaging with user centric messages.
  • Identify in product cross promotion (like we do in K8 where we identify DB and Applications without agents) and define the experience so that we can start a basic PLG motion.
  • Detailed competitive analysis on Ddog, Nrelic, Logic monitor, Dynatrace, Kentik and startups etc. on their customer journey approaches.
  • Formulate a strategy working with other PMs on what a freemium offer in 2025 would look like.
