Grief Counselors provide care as part of the Hospice Bereavement Team at the Wilson Support Center, an affiliate of Hospice & Palliative Care Buffalo. The bereavement program is a standard service within the Medicare hospice benefit providing continued support to a hospice patient's support system for 13 months after their death.
Grief Counselors provide clinical support to clients throughout their unique grief process, establishing plans of care utilizing a variety of modalities that assess changing needs, facilitate coping strategies, and mobilize community resources to foster healthy adjustment and improved quality of life. Grief counselors exhibit exceptional insight into the psychology of loss and have demonstrable experience in grief counseling theories and interventions. Grief Counselors serve children, teens, adults, dyads, and families.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities for Grief Counselors:
  • Customize a counseling plan of care, foster engagement and counsel clients through their grief process. Assess for risk factors that may contribute to prolonged grief.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of clinical counseling theory and interventions in the areas of individual, family and group work.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary grief theory related to prolonged grief, anticipatory grief, loss-specific issues, and reactions to loss at various developmental ages and life-stages.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of ethical and professional standards, with awareness of emerging trends in the fields of counseling and grief.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with diverse client populations.
  • Consult with interdisciplinary team members to enhance support of patients and their support system by highlighting the impact of anticipatory grief and implementing strategies to mitigate prolonged grief.
  • Collaborate with community providers as needed to optimize client care through full consideration of psychosocial needs.
  • Provide psychoeducation to clients, and coordinate community resource linkage.
  • Facilitate support groups with ongoing evaluation and development to meet evolving needs of clients and community.
  • Participate in individual and peer supervision.
  • Present grief education to community partners.
  • Utilize EMR to record clinical observations and symptom progression in client charts
  • Qualifications for Grief Counselors:
Current NYS Driver's License, free of serious violations, vehicle is required.
Education / Certification
  • Masters degree in counseling, social work, or psychology from an accredited school
  • Current NYS licensure required.
Experience
  • 3 years in counseling position, addressing issues of grief and loss
  • Clinical experience and expertise in grief and loss with awareness of community resources.
