ACLU - Affiliate Offices is Hiring a Development Director Near Concord, NH

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire is an affiliate of the ACLU, Inc., a national public interest organization devoted to the defense of civil rights and civil liberties. For over 100 years, the ACLU has served as the nation's primary protector of the liberties that define our democracy. The organization implements its vital civil liberties mission in all 50 states in large part through affiliates such as the ACLU of New Hampshire.
The ACLU of New Hampshire, the state's largest civil rights and civil liberties organization with a staff of 16 people, employs litigation, public policy advocacy, communications and public education strategies to protect and promote a broad range of constitutional values and individual rights, including freedom of speech, equality, due process, racial justice, privacy, religious liberty, criminal justice reforms, voting rights, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, disability rights, and immigrants' rights. The ACLU of New Hampshire litigates a broad range of constitutional cases in federal and state courts through direct representation, amicus briefs, and administrative complaints to state and federal agencies.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of New Hampshire seeks a dynamic and experienced Development Director (aka Director of Philanthropy) to expand and manage the affiliate's robust development program.
The candidate will provide visionary, strategic leadership that builds strong relationships with donors. The Development Director is a member of the senior staff and reports directly to the Executive Director. They will develop and oversee a broad range of responsibilities including planning, supervising and executing the leadership and major gifts program, administering the grants program, and developing complementary fundraising and donor cultivation plans for donors and prospects.
The Development Director will maintain their own donor portfolio and as well as the Executive Director's and collaborate with the Executive Director to engage in face-to-face solicitations. They will spend a significant amount of time directly interacting with donors, both in and out of the office. They will work closely with senior staff to craft grant proposals to support programmatic goals. The Development Director will be responsible for supervising the Associate Development Director (aka Associate Director of Philanthropy). This is a full-time, exempt position based in our Concord Office. The ACLU Foundation of NH has an annual operating budget of $2.5 million.
Required Qualifications
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU
  • Six years of development experience in a senior-level fundraising position in a non-profit environment.
  • Knowledge of principles, tools, tactics and strategies employed in major fundraising campaigns; CFRE preferred.
  • Successful track record securing donor commitments for leadership gifts, major gifts, and planned gifts.
  • Ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and foster an environment of creativity and professional growth.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication and presentation skills. Ability to simplify complex themes and activities into short, compelling presentations or written pieces.
  • Experience with donor database management and systems that track results; ability to ensure secure, accurate private donor records and commitment to confidentiality of donor information.
  • Possesses excellent organizational and administrative skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with office technology (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Google suite), project management tools such as Asana, as well as the ability to become proficient using other specialized software, as may be required.
  • Skill in developing, managing, and creating budgets and financial reports.
  • Must possess and maintain a current valid driver's license or be able to access adequate transportation in order to travel to visits with donors throughout the state.
  • Able to manage a work schedule that will occasionally include evening and weekend meetings.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Provides strategic vision and overall leadership for the organization's donor engagement and grants programs to advance the vision and priorities of ACLU of NH projects, campaigns, and initiatives.
  • Manages a skilled development professional to ensure the efficient administration and allocation of human and financial resources of the department towards key ACLU of NH goals, while enhancing their professional growth.
  • Leads in the development of strategies and methods for establishing, cultivating, and nurturing support from individual donors and foundations.
  • Collaborates with the ACLU National's development office to pursue key individuals for leadership and planned gifts.
  • Manages a robust program for the solicitation of grants from foundations and the fulfillment of reporting requirements.
  • Administers a system and implements tools to track and measure success of fundraising projects, campaigns, and related organization fundraising efforts.
  • Collaborates with colleagues at ACLU National and affiliates to maximize financial support to the affiliate and the ACLU as a whole.
Fundraising Responsibilities
  • Develops and executes a comprehensive, strategic, donor-centered fundraising program with specific fundraising goals and metrics, with a focus on the acquisition of leadership gifts ($100,000) and major donors ($10,000 ).
  • Engages in face-to-face solicitations with major gift prospects, both directly and in partnership with the Executive Director and program staff.
  • Manages executive director's portfolio of 25-30 donors and own portfolio of 80 donors.
  • Creates and implements 12-month strategies for assigned portfolio donors.
  • Manages a substantial grants program including scheduling meetings, writing proposals and reports, and cultivating relationships with grant representatives.
  • Prepares regular fundraising and department activity reports for the executive director and for board meetings; attend board meetings at the Executive Director's request.
  • Collaborates with the affiliate's communications team on a range of donor related development events and materials.
  • Creates and manages Development's various donor communications such as emails, newsletters, and virtual town hall meetings.
  • Maintains active familiarity with the ACLU's programs and positions; represents the ACLU of NH in public gatherings as needed.
  • Participates in national development training as needed.
POSITION AND BENEFITS
The Development Director will be based in Concord, NH. This position is full-time, exempt, and will pay an annual salary of $85,000-$100,000 depending on experience. Relocation stipend for moving expenses available up to $4,000, contingent on two years' employment.
