This position will require individual to split their workweek between two offices. Two days per week, Weston, WV. The other three days per week will be at our Bridgeport, WV location.
Under the supervision of the Surgical Counselor Coordinator, the Surgical Counselor is the surgical team member specifically involved with and responsible for scheduling and preparing patients for surgery by completing and/or obtaining appropriate paperwork and information; by performing the necessary patient counseling/education for the particular surgery being scheduled; and for complying with all regulatory requirements and/or standard operating procedure of the organization and the surgical facility.
· Meet with patients in order to provide education, explanation and guidance on upcoming surgical procedures. Provide meaningful insight into each procedure and how the procedure will impact their eyesight.
· For cataract procedures, discuss premium lenses compared to a standard lens.
· Provide a complete surgery packet to each eligible patient. Review the documents located within the packet and address any questions or concerns with the patient.
· Assure patient prescriptions are communicated to applicable pharmacy and to the patient. Provide education to the patient on the purpose of the prescription.
· Obtain all necessary documents including patient consents, lens selections (if applicable), and testing is completed prior to the day of surgery.
· Enter all appropriate patient data in the appropriate software systems in a timely manner. Verify all information with the physician, such as the exact surgical procedure (i.e., Blepharoplasty vs. Ptosis Repair).
· Schedule pre and post-op appointments related to surgery within established guidelines.
· Provide complete and comprehensive surgical patient packets to the surgical facility.
· Act as liaison between patients, physicians, and the surgical facility.
· Respond and follow-up as soon as possible to all patient phone calls and questions.
· Follow-up on missing information that is needed for surgery (i.e., IOL size, missing charts, etc.), and communicate findings to the surgical facility as soon as possible.
· Keep the surgical facility informed regarding cancellations and other schedule changes as soon as they occur.
· Stay abreast of changes or the latest developments in technology (i.e. premium IOL’s), as they pertain to the organization, to assure appropriate answers to patient questions.
· Obtain patient vital signs as needed.
· Upon request, completes or assigns the tasks to monitor, track and complete various reports.
· Other duties as assigned.
Education/Training/Experience:
· Education/Experience: High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED).
· Two years of medical services experience in a health care organization.
· At least one (1) year of surgical counseling experience is highly preferred.
· Experience in basic medical coding and medical insurance billing is preferred.

Pay: $17.87 - $25.02 per hour
