Anvil Corporation is Hiring a Control Systems Design Lead Near Billings, MT

Position Description:
JOB SUMMARY
This is a Work Group Lead (WGL) position for a mid or senior level Instrumentation and Control systems (I&C) designer. The WGL role is a central position within our organization, which is structured as a matrix.
Our WGLs serve as the key technical and client-facing leaders for a specific client(s) and engineering discipline. The WGLs perform their work in tandem: one engineer and one designer. They are also the single point of contact for a suite of projects under a particular program (a set of geographically organized clients), and thus coordinate directly with the Program Manager (PM). A strong WGL must be competent and function smoothly in both technical and personal/relationship realms. Strong emotional intelligence (EQ) is a key asset in this position. Our WGLs may also serve as project leaders for single-discipline or small-scale projects; and thus the position is a logical stepping stone to becoming a project leader.
The WGL position requires a blend of technical, personal, communication, and entrepreneurial skills. Technical expertise is helpful, but not required. Strong communication skills are imperative. Ability to build and maintain relationships with a variety of personalities, both within and outside our organization, is central to success in this position. A working knowledge and understanding of stage-gated industrial projects is also necessary. Lastly, a WGL must engage in grass-roots business development by building relationships directly with client counterparts, be responsible for the products and quality of a small team of controls and instrument engineers and designers, and manage and forecast the workload for his/her team. A successful candidate may desire either a technical career path or a path directed toward leadership and management.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Execute project design tasks in partnership with Control Systems Engineer counterparts
  • Develop scope for projects in all project phases; provide input to project plans and deliverable lists
  • Review and provide input to project plans and schedules
  • Develop Control Systems scope on the project P&IDs
  • Coordinate with Control Systems Engineer, Design WGL, and project team to develop basic schedules
  • Coordinate inter-discipline design directly with counterparts in other disciplines (such as piping and electrical)
  • Work within 3D design software where applicable; contribute to and extract information from 3D model
  • Perform detailed vendor document reviews and incorporate into project design
  • Establish and review design budgets for all projects on your assigned program
  • Perform drawing and document research in client databases; coordinate with Document Control at Anvil and Clients to properly find and checkout drawings

    • Cabinet/Equipment Layouts
    • Cable & Conduit Routing Schedules
    • Conduit & Tray Diagrams
    • Instrument Installation Details
    • Material Take-Offs (MTO) and Bills of Material (BoMs)
    • Coordinate final package quality checks and hand-off to project assistants for formal issue
    • NOTE: this position may not perform all of these duties on a given project, but is ultimately responsible for the quality and completeness of the package
  • Perform quality checks on ones own work and that of ones team
  • Ensure projects and work processes adhere to Anvils Project Services Quality System (PSQS)
  • Perform work with moderate supervision and guidance
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES - TECHNICAL

  • Design infrastructure for industrial communication and control networks
  • Design wiring, conduit, and cable tray systems for NEC-hazardous classified areas.
  • Prepare detailed design of projects in compliance with governing codes, regulations, and client standards
  • Design PLC and DCS hardware and wiring systems; working knowledge of PLC and DCS point types
  • Basic working knowledge of 3D Design and software
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES - OTHER
  • Familiar with and able to work within stage-gated project processes and requirements
  • Prioritize own work on multiple projects
  • Perform effectively in a team environment, both in-person and remotely
  • Strong communication and organizational skills: written, oral, in-person
  • Able to develop design budgets and schedules
  • Experience developing construction packages for small to medium projects ($1MM to $30MM TIC)
  • Highly detail oriented with a strong, self-driven work ethic
  • Attention to details: able to detect and provide solutions for drawing consistency, quality, and presentation errors in deliverables, and able to point out all of these in others work in a constructive manner.
  • Self-driven work ethic, including desire and capacity to encourage others and build a team
