Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated, capable, and experienced, board certified Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join the Neurosurgery team at ProHealth Care in Waukesha, WI. The APP will collaborate with a neurosurgeon to coordinate patient care, including facilitating the progress of the patient through the complex healthcare system and ensuring continuity of care. Patient care is coordinated within a multi-disciplinary team that follows evidence-based practice and clinical practice guidelines. The APPs primary role will be focused on the outpatient clinic but the APP will have the opportunity for a comprehensive role that includes inpatient rounding and surgery cross-training. The APP will work full time, either 4X10 hour days or 5X8 hour days.

Job Duties

  1. Obtains complete medical history and physical exam data on patients.
  2. Conducts a comprehensive review of patient records.
  3. Interprets and analyzes patient data to determine appropriate diagnostic testing and therapeutic procedures for patients.
  4. Performs procedures and selective medical services (including diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive health care procedures) as appropriate under the direction of a physician.
  5. Provides emergent and non-emergent consultation in the Emergency Department to direct patient care intervention under the direction of physician.
  6. Provides inpatient consults under the direction of a physician.
  7. Receives and manages urgent and non-urgent calls regarding neurosurgical patients in the Emergency Department, ICU, and other inpatient departments.
  8. Keeps accurate documentation in the hospital’s electronic medical record.
  9. Communicates appropriately and timely with physicians regarding any patient care issues.
  10. Communicates effectively and professionally with other service lines and staff members.
  11. Develops and implements patient and patient family education.
  12. Functions independently in an organized and timely manner.
  13. Conducts self in a professional manner at all times.
  14. Responsible for professional growth and development, including regular attendance at available in-services, seminars, and other education offerings. 
  15. Responsible for professional certification recordkeeping. 
  16. Complies with professional, regulatory, governmental and departmental standards
  17. Contributes to the professional development of others by sharing knowledge and skills, providing and accepting feedback, and contributing to the education of staff and students.

  11. In-depth knowledge and understanding of health promotion and maintenance with ability to develop, implement, and communicate patient education plans
  12. Strong pharmacology, anatomy, and physiology knowledge
  13. Desire to work with all types of people and work as a team member 
  14. Good eye/hand coordination and precision 
  15. Advanced computer knowledge

Educational and Experience Required 

Education: Master’s Degree in Nursing with National Certification as an Adult, Acute Care, or Family Nurse Practitioner or Masters from an accredited Physician Assistant Program and national certification from NCCPA or AAPA

Licensure and Certification: Requires current unlimited Wisconsin State license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant

  1. Requires unlimited Wisconsin controlled substances registration certificate
  2. Requires unlimited DEA
  3. Current CPR Certification
  4. Current ACLS Certification

Preferred Experience: Previous APP experience within an emergency department, trauma service, surgery service line, critical care, or neurosurgical service line is preferred. While experience is preferred, a newly graduated APP will be considered with applicable clinical experience in critical care, emergency department, or another neuro-specialty.

Physical Demands

  6. Occasional lifting involving patients, as well as occasional lifting or moving of medical equipment and supplies

  8. Able to pay attention to detail for long periods of time
  9. Work under time constraints 
  10. Environmental conditions to include frequent contact with blood and other body fluids, as well as exposure to air or surface borne illnesses
