Position: Supervisor of Canine Care
Department: Canine Care
Reports to: Manager of Canine Care & Adoptions
Category: Exempt; salary
Salary: $40,000-$50,000/Annually
Supervises: Canine Specialist Team and Volunteers
Job Purpose:
The Supervisor of Canine Care KC Pet Project is responsible for leading, monitoring, and supervising a group of employees to achieve goals that contribute to departmental and organizational growth. Supervisors motivate and inspire their team by creating an environment that promotes positive communication, encourages bonding of team members, and demonstrates flexibility. The ideal candidate will have experience leading a team, animal care and training, progressive matchmaking, and customer service.
Daily Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Represent KC Pet Project in a professional, caring, and solution-oriented manner while embracing our “Solutions, Not Excuses” and “One Mission, One Team” mottos through hands on leadership.
  • Maintain an extensive knowledge of internal shelter policies and processes, community resources, animal control ordinances, local and state regulations, and appropriate standards of care. Stay up to date on organization needs and capacity to proactively align support.
  • In collaboration with Manager of Canine Care, provide ongoing support, accountability, coaching, mentoring, and feedback for team members, both staff and volunteers, and act as an exemplary representative of the organization.
  • Demonstrate progressive leadership, actively contribute to reaching department and organization goals, and ensure completion of assigned department tasks and responsibilities in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Ensure appropriate standards of care are executed for the animals (canine, small animals, livestock) housed at KCCAC, including fundamental basic care, disease prevention, safe and humane handling, health and behavior observations, enrichment, and sanitation.
  • Ensure excellent customer service is provided. Includes but not limited to interactions with potential adopters, facilitating meet-and-greet sessions between potential adopters, explaining any history we have on the animal, and conduct dog to dog introductions.
  • Manage and conduct appropriate matchmaking for potential adopters to foster successful long-term placements.
  • Manage and maintain community engagement efforts to increase volunteer and donor support through in-kind and monetary donations, volunteer service, and customer satisfaction surveys and platforms.
  • Adhere to and ensure compliance with all KC Pet Project organizational policies and procedures and safety guidelines and procedures. Report concerns/challenges to department leadership.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Performance Factors and Necessary Skills:
  • Must be able to work and lead in a high volume, fast paced, high stress environment.
  • Self-motivated, great attitude, team-oriented a must.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and leadership skills.
  • Working knowledge of dog handling and behavior, including pets with challenging temperaments and with severe health conditions.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills; being able to make decisions in an environment of competing priorities that are in the best interest of the animal and the organization.
  • Excellent time management ability; able to juggle multiple deadlines and contradictory projects.
  • Be an example of punctuality and report to work on time.
  • Basic Computer Literacy (Microsoft Office, ability to learn PetPoint Database system, AirTable, Slack, etc.)
  • Working Conditions:
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, high noise levels, extreme temperatures, hazardous chemicals, and sharp objects. Able to lift up to 50 lb., long periods of standing, bending, stooping, reaching, animal handling, and restraint in an animal shelter-type setting. Exposure to animals of all sizes and temperament.
Qualifications/Educational Background:
  • High School or equivalent.
  • Minimum one year experience in shelter operations or working or volunteering in a shelter environment is required.
  • Any combination of training and experience which demonstrates successful animal handling, sanitation practices, customer service, and/or the knowledge and skills necessary for this position.
  • Full time, 40 hours a week, including one weekend day. Some holidays are required.
