What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laboratory Manager position at X4 Engineering?
We are seeking an experienced Environmental Test Lab Manager to lead and oversee a team of engineers conducting environmental qualification testing to MIL-STD-810 standards. This role will manage day-to-day lab operations, ensure high-quality test execution, and support customer and program requirements across a range of aerospace, defense, and ruggedized product applications.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise in environmental testing (vibration, thermal, shock, etc.), leadership experience, and a solid understanding of test standards. Experience with RTCA DO-160 is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a team of environmental test engineers & technicians, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and performance management
- Oversee execution of environmental testing in accordance with MIL-STD-810 (latest revisions)
- Plan, schedule, and prioritize lab activities to meet customer and program deadlines
- Ensure test procedures, setups, and reports meet quality, regulatory, and customer requirements
- Review and approve test plans, procedures, and final reports
- Act as the primary technical point of contact for customers and internal stakeholders
- Support business development efforts, including technical proposals and capability discussions
- Maintain and improve lab processes, equipment utilization, and operational efficiency
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and lab best practices
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across testing methods and lab operations
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related field)
- 7 years of experience in environmental testing
- Strong hands-on experience with MIL-STD-810 testing (e.g., vibration, shock, thermal cycling, humidity, altitude)
- Proven leadership or supervisory experience (team lead, manager, or similar)
- Experience managing test schedules, resources, and lab operations
- Strong understanding of environmental test equipment (shakers, chambers, etc.)
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
