This role focuses on contracts, claims, disputes, and risk management, supporting project teams and executive leadership. This is not a C-suite role.
Position Overview
The In-House Counsel will:
- Provide practical legal guidance on construction contracts, projects, and regulatory matters.
- Assist in reviewing, drafting, and negotiating construction agreements.
- Advise project teams on claims, disputes, and potential litigation.
- Support risk management, compliance, and legal best practices.
- Minimum 3-5 years of legal experience, preferably in construction law, commercial contracts, or real estate.
- Familiarity with construction contracts (e.g., AIA), risk allocation, claims management, and dispute resolution.
- Litigation experience is a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple matters independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Prior in-house experience or experience supporting general contractors, construction managers, or design-build firms is desirable.
Contracts & Legal Advisory:
- Draft, review, and negotiate construction-related agreements, including owner contracts, subcontracts, supplier/vendor agreements, and design professional agreements.
- Advise on contract interpretation, change orders, delays, and scope disputes.
- Support project teams in claim avoidance, documentation, and resolution.
- Assist with dispute resolution processes, including negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and litigation, in coordination with outside counsel.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local construction laws.
- Advise on licensing, bonding, insurance, and regulatory requirements.
- Partner with internal teams on risk management and safety programs.
- Provide guidance on contract compliance, risk awareness, and legal best practices.
- Serve as a trusted business partner, balancing legal protection with practical solutions.
